I did hear from sources that know him is that he is a guy that likes 'challenges' . He came to Tenn. and told him with financial support from the AD he could make the Vols program top notich. He did as he promised and was rewarded for it $$$ .. new stadium remodel too He doesn't lack confidence ..that's for sure.ramfandan wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 14:00 pmThanks for the link . Vitello makes $3M per year at Tenn. Do you truly think Buster Posey would be able to lure him away by paying him LESS ?
I know there are managers making less than $3M but also a few making substantially more
Roberts is hightest paid (which makes sense LAD $8.1 M .. Craig Counsel is making $8 M per year 5yr-$40 M deal he had signed
Alex Cora Red sox reportedly makes $7.1 M and D'Backs Tony Luvello at $5 M
Bochey and Boone NYY are tied at 5th with $.4.5 M
A factor to remember ... Tenn. has NO state income tax and California A person in Cali making OVER $721,000 per year pays at a rate of 12.3%
So Posey has to offset $$ lost in the income tax which amouts to several hundred thousand dollar per year .
I highly doubt Vitello would leave for a cut in pay . Think if anything , his numbers will be a substantial increase. Just my thoughts.
His would have bonuses no doubt. So for instance, if Giants make wildcard spot , that bonus could be substanially higher than possibly other managers. In that way , the Giants could keep the base salary more in line but willing to pay above and beyond if he gets the team into playoffs. For instance if Vitello gets San Fran to a WS then maybe he could make what Cora or Counsel make . Just conjecture

You’re acting as if Tony Vitello is the only coach who has ever built a powerhouse college baseball program.

There have been MUCH bigger historical names than those. And there will be more in the future. Which begs the sincere question: why do you obviously seem to think this story is such a big deal?ramfandan wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 14:27 pmNope ! MLB vs college. He's a multi millionaire either way and there are only 30 MLB managers. If he does well he will get paid and if he flops there will always be several colleges willing to hire him.ramfandan wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 14:00 pmThanks for the link . This is intriguing. I wonder what his staff will look like. Normally a manager wants coaches he knows but he has never been in pro baseball.

The U. of Tenn. has named Frank Anderson ,their pitching coach as interim head coach .
Anderson is a college baseball veteran with over four decades of coaching experience and two national titles as an assistant. He has served as an assistant coach at Tennessee since 2018 and is considered one of the top pitching coaches in the country.
Under Anderson, Tennessee’s pitching staff has regularly been among the nation’s best. The Vols have finished in the top 20 nationally in ERA, WHIP and strikeout-to-walk ratio in each of the past seven seasons. He was named the 2022 Rawlings Pitching Coach of the Year after Tennessee finished No. 1 in the nation in ERA, strikeout-to-walk ratio, WHIP, and walks allowed per nine innings.
A total of 25 pitchers have been selected in the MLB Draft in his eight seasons at UT, including four first-round picks. Throughout his career, Anderson has coached over 100 pitchers who went on to be selected in the MLB Draft. He most recently worked with Liam Doyle ,the Cardinals 1st round pick.
Tenn. will do a national search for a new head coach according to AD Danny White and that Current associate head coach Josh Elander is a candidate for the Vols job.
Will be interesting to see if Elander gets the Vols job or if not maybe he would go along with Vitello to San Fran in some capacity. Several people seem to be backing Elander to succeed Vitello and continue the program. Elander has a reputation as a powerhouse recruiter. He originally was batting coach at UT in 2018. He is highly respected . Some are saying UT should stay in house for Vitello's replacement. .at least for now.

It's like Rod Dedeaux, Skip Bertman, Ron Polk, Augie Garrido, Tim Corbin, Ray Tanner, Pat Casey never existed.NYCardsFan wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 14:06 pm You’re acting as if Tony Vitello is the only coach who has ever built a powerhouse college baseball program.

anyways, we needed 3 off-topic threads in 3 days on this very topic....none labeled "OT"...but hey, that's okay, easy slip.

edit ~ RIP Pat Casey, your program may likely wilt away over the next 5-10 years. Less and less top talent will head to Oregon State with no major conference. But you kicked (donkey) last year without a conference, so kudos to that. Delaying the inevitable

He has zero pro experience in any capacity. He needs to bring a couple of his coaches with him. Some guys he trusts to share information and trusts to gives tasks. There are likely people in that organization who wanted the job he got.ramfandan wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 15:20 pmYes, regarding wanting coaches under you that you know .ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 14:37 pmMLB vs college. The story is a big deal and received national recognition due to the fact that Vitello is the 1st manager EVER to be hired by a MLB organization that never previously managed nor coached in either the majors or minor league affiliates. So it received quite a bit of publicity . If Vitello has some success I am sure there will be others in the future to get the same opportunity but up until now this has never happened before. Usually in sports when something is groundbreaking (the first ever ) it is considered a 'big deal ' (your words ). His hiring made history .NYCardsFan wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 14:33 pmThere have been MUCH bigger historical names than those. And there will be more in the future. Re: ESPN : Tenn. Vitello accepts Giants manager job
OK, I get that. But Vitello is hardly the first MLB manager to be hired with no prior MLB managing experience. I mean, Kurt Suzuki was hired just yesterday, and he had NO managerial experience at ANY level. Albert Pujols has no prior MLB or professional managing experience, and he is being interviewed for jobs. Mike Matheny had no prior MLB, minor league, or college managerial experience before being hired. Etc., etc.ramfandan wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 20:56 pmThe story is a big deal and received national recognition due to the fact that Vitello is the 1st manager EVER to be hired by a MLB organization that never previously managed nor coached in either the majors or minor league affiliates. So while it's certainly true that Vitello is the first college coach to go directly to managing an MLB team without prior MLB managing experience, is that really a materially bigger logical/career leap than those of the parade of other first-time hires over the years? I mean, I agree with you that it's newsworthy, and I can understand a thread about it, but your almost breathless play-by-play coverage makes it seem like it's some sort of unthinkable moonshot. It just seems a little out of proportion with the actual importance of the story on the merits. I doubt anyone will be talking about this a couple days from now, and I suspect few people outside of SF and TN even care. Of course, like everyone else on here, you are perfectly at liberty to post about whatever you want, I'm just trying to understand the overwrought blow-by-blow, tick-tock coverage of it like it's tantamount to Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier.
