Joe Torre in an interview said he wasn't the best at strategy but his key to success was getting those highly paid players to play team baseball.

If Vitello works out for the Giants we could see more of these hires. If he flops he might be the first and last with no professional experience of any kind.

and what is your source regarding that ? or are you assuming

Vitello makes $3M per year at Tenn. Do you truly think Buster Posey would be able to lure him away by paying him LESS ?
I know there are managers making less than $3M but also a few making substantially more
Roberts is hightest paid (which makes sense LAD $8.1 M .. Craig Counsel is making $8 M per year 5yr-$40 M deal he had signed
Alex Cora Red sox reportedly makes $7.1 M and D'Backs Tony Luvello at $5 M
Bochey and Boone NYY are tied at 5th with $.4.5 M

A factor to remember ... Tenn. has NO state income tax and California A person in Cali making OVER $721,000 per year pays at a rate of 12.3%
So Posey has to offset $$ lost in the income tax which amouts to several hundred thousand dollar per year .

I highly doubt Vitello would leave for a cut in pay . Think if anything , his numbers will be a substantial increase. Just my thoughts.

His would have bonuses no doubt. So for instance, if Giants make wildcard spot , that bonus could be substanially higher than possibly other managers. In that way , the Giants could keep the base salary more in line but willing to pay above and beyond if he gets the team into playoffs. For instance if Vitello gets San Fran to a WS then maybe he could make what Cora or Counsel make . Just conjecture

PS Forgot to mention the $3M 'buyout' (one year's salary ) that Vitello owes to Tenn. for leaving Tenn. So who is paying the $3M off ? Doubt Tony V. wants to fork over the full $3M out of his own pocket . Maybe Giants don't want to pay all of the buyout either . So the two sides probably had to find a 'meeting point' on that issue.

Vitello, 47, is currently the highest-paid coach in the college baseball ranks, at more than $3 million a season, and it’s believed he’ll have to take a pay cut, as first-time MLB managers earn significantly less.

Thanks for the link . I see where the Giants did pay the full buyout of $3 M but the lower salary per year does surprise me ,though that could be the base .. One would think there are some escaltor bonuses that might up his pay substantially . In other words , win big and you will make more than you did at U.T. ?
