He went #9 and the Blues picked at #16. Unfortunately Parekh wasn't available anymore by the time the Blues picked (he was drafted by Calgary). If he was, it's safe to say he would have been taken instead. There's a draft order and only way teams can pick higher is by trading, or by finishing lower in the standings. Some players also mature faster than others but doesn't mean they'll definitively be the better player. I'd say wait a few years and then we can come back and see what production looks like. Way too early to "compare".
In the 2023 season, the Blues won 5 more games total than Minnesota and Calgary. This led to Minnesota selecting Buium, and Calgary selecting Parekh, and St Louis selecting Jiricek.
Fast forward to now.
Buium and Parekh are starting and playing key roles on defense.
Jiricek is somewhere in Eastern Canada, playing mediocre hockey in the OHL, going to Burger King afterwards to gain 25lbs.

For quick fix to RHD in 2025, Army sent Bolduc to Montreal so that we could watch Maillloux try to be 1/2 as good as Buium or Parekh.
Meanwhile, Bolduc is making fans roar in Montreal.
Draft position matters, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR SCOUTING DEPARTMENT IS MEDIOCRE.

Once again I'm perplexed by the lack of logic here of the scouting dept is so mediocre then who cares about Bolduc? He was taken 17th he's a nobody drafted by a mediocre staff, good riddance?

Parekh has been great so far....but Buium has been awful. He would be pounded relentlessly on this board if we had drafted him.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑12 Oct 2025 06:55 amGetting warmer... I wanted them to trade up for Buium. Some wanted them to trade down for Solberg. Right now either looks to be the better choice than Jiricek, but we'll see. I seriously doubt he plays a game with the Blues...he looks like he'd be dealt off in a package for someone else later on down the line. I just don't like that pick, and probably never will.

Did you follow Jiricek's progress this summer and the comment from Steen regarding a certain comp? There was a night and day difference in the AJ we saw from last summer to this summer.smilinjoefission wrote: ↑13 Oct 2025 15:33 pm I wanted them to trade up for Buium. I tend to agree with you. I wanted Solberg or to trade back further and take Charlie Elick. Jiricek looked a bit better this year, but I just don’t see a star in the making, and have my doubts that he’ll be much more than a bottom pair Dman. I hope we are both wrong, but I HATED the pick and still do.smilinjoefission wrote: ↑13 Oct 2025 15:33 pm I wanted them to trade up for Buium. Some wanted them to trade down for Solberg. Not sure if your ? is to me or not, as my comments were more related to my view of the lack of substantial upside of Jiricek. I wanted to trade back, so if directed at me, the answer is no. Both Buium and Parekh look like they will be solid NHL players, but that price would have been too high. A 1st and a 2nd or 3rd was the going rate.DawgDad wrote: ↑13 Oct 2025 17:26 pmOK, Bolduc plus Blues #1 to move up. Still bite?TruBlueFan_1970 wrote: ↑13 Oct 2025 17:16 pmI tend to agree with you. I'll give Steen the respect he deserves, but I'm definitely in the "show me" camp...I need to see what the hype is, and so far he's still in juniors, on a really strong team.b-a-a-a-rclay wrote: ↑13 Oct 2025 16:21 pmDid you follow Jiricek's progress this summer and the comment from Steen regarding a certain comp? That wouldn’t have been enough IMO. Bolduc showed nothing that season and was a huge question mark how effective he would actually be at the NHl level.DawgDad wrote: ↑13 Oct 2025 17:26 pmOK, Bolduc plus Blues #1 to move up. Let’s be real here too….Buium has looked every bit as brutal as Mailloux….
Just shows you…defensemen are always very slow to develop and their early years can look downright ugly at times.

Re: Parekh vs Jiricek
Minny traded their 1st round pick and a 3rd rounder to move up to get Buium. Granted, they only moved up one spot to get him, but it put Philly at pick #13. In what world would Bolduc and our 1st not have been enough for Philly to move back 3 more spots. Going rate was a 2nd or 3rd to move up, not a prospect like Bolduc.Bubble4427 wrote: ↑14 Oct 2025 17:17 pmThat wouldn’t have been enough IMO. Because Philly knew by moving down 1 spot the guy they had their heart set on (Luchanko) would still be there. Moving back 4 spots doesn't give them that guarantee so the price goes up considerably.TruBlueFan_1970 wrote: ↑14 Oct 2025 17:24 pmMinny traded their 1st round pick and a 3rd rounder to move up to get Buium. Agree, the price would have been something like Bolduc + pick 16 for pick 12 and we would have cringed at the price. That said, hindsight I would have done it, Buium is on trajectory to be up there with Quinn Hughes.bluetunehead wrote: ↑15 Oct 2025 11:06 amBecause Philly knew by moving down 1 spot the guy they had their heart set on (Luchanko) would still be there. What really sucks is Sam Dickinson being available for the Sharks at 11. I mean they picked up two cornerstones in about one hour.
