Penn State fired Franklin because he couldn't win big games. Why would they want Drinkwitz???

Big donors want results. Fans scream and holler. It takes an administration with fortitude and intelligence to overlook the fans, and a lot of courage to ignore the big donors (probably impossible). But somebody has to do some educating of the realities. College football has changed drastically. It's a lot harder to build and maintain a powerhouse, because everybody else is almost as capable of building their own powerhouse as you are; they are only limited by the money and their ability to evaluate talent. If you have to spend millions on a handful of allegedly elite players to keep up with the others spending millions on their handful, you better hope your handful meets expectations and the other players are good enough to complement them.

In the Big 10, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State have been the traditional powerhouses. Now, teams like Indiana and Illinois are capable of being just as good, and several other teams are trying to get into the picture. You really can't depend upon being one of the top three if you're Penn State.

It's the same in the SEC. Used to be, everybody knew it was Bama and Georgia most years, with LSU at times and in a given year one other team entered the picture. Now look...besides Bama and Georgia, you have Ol Miss, TAM, LSU, Tenn, and Oklahoma in the top 15, all considered playoff contenders, with Mizzou, Vandy, and Texas just to the outside of the top 15 in the latest poll and still with a decent chance of making the playoffs. And on any given Saturday any one of those teams is capable of beating any of the others. The bluebloods simply aren't that much more bluebloody than a bunch of other teams. So the reality is that there are going to be years when some of those traditional bluebloods are going to be unlucky or outclassed and not make the playoffs.

Who in their right mind would want to go coach at Penn State given what they just did to a coach who’d went 34-8 his previous 3 seasons and 2 top 10 finishes. I know they’re a “blue blood” but coming off their near death penalty and all that weirdness, they’re just not what they used to be as a brand.

And I thought Tennessee had irrationally high expectations.
Per ESPN their top target is Urban Meyer.

A school that kept a sexual predator as DC for years and then refused to hold his primary enabler accountable shouldn't have any problems hiring a raging sociopath.

Penn St made history the last two weeks

They lost back to back games as 20+ point favorites.

You and I could go 59 over .500 against those putz schedules. 4-21 against Top 10 teams, and PSU was supposed to be a Top 10 team many times. And 2 of those wins were against Utah and Boise State. Yippee! And you're fired!

It’ll take an Urban Meyer to make it there. Someone who doesn’t need the job, can walk away, get fired, whatever and not worry about their career. Maybe legacy, but not career.

Here’s what’s hard to figure out. Franklin was more successful than Paterno in his last 12 years. Paterno had been around forever and won a few natties. I get that. But what a weird place, the way it went down in flames. And here comes Franklin and all he did was resurrect that thing and almost got to the mountain top. And they fire him 1st sign of mediocrity.

I’m 99.9% sure, right now, Drink would never leave Mizzou for Penn State. They’re delusional if they think they have anything to offer he doesn’t already have at Mizzou.

Yep. They listed the normal names like Rhule, but when Urban Meyers’s name was mentioned people were taken back at first but after talking about it for 10 minutes they came to the conclusion that it was worth a call. Not many coaches floating around with three national championships, multiple SEC titles, multiple B10 titles, etc… His last 14 years of coaching at Utah, Florida, and Ohio State he only had 1 finish unranked, and only 3 outside the top 10.
