James Franklin fired at Penn State

Post by rezero »

In today's college sports you simply need to win or else you will be shown the door. Teams now have a 40% roster turn over every year, so coaches are no longer afforded a "rebuilding" year or two. With the portal you are expected to build championship teams every year. Franklin's last 3 years at Penn State were 11-2, 10-3, and 13-3 with all being top 10 finishing in final AP poll.

I'm not surprised. He built records based on beating up on B1G nobodies. Now he couldn't beat them anymore, so...

And Drink's buyout is $5 million as I understand it. Would PSU go after him?

$50 million buyout.

Who in their right mind would want to go coach at Penn State given what they just did to a coach who’d went 34-8 his previous 3 seasons and 2 top 10 finishes. I know they’re a “blue blood” but coming off their near death penalty and all that weirdness, they’re just not what they used to be as a brand.

And I thought Tennessee had irrationally high expectations.

Thank God we have Drink, who has stayed up to date with the changes in college football.

Bray out at Oregon State too.

Things can go south in a hurry these days. See Gundy, Mike.

Don’t know what he’s thinking about Franklin out at PSU, but he wasn’t thinking too clearly Saturday.

He's probably thinking he's glad he beat the rush to transfer.

I’ve seen Cignetti, Rhule, and Mullen all mentioned. Have to think they’d slot behind Florida in the pecking order no?

Mullen would probably come the cheapest of him, Ruhle and Cignetti. He makes just $3.5 million in salary now, and his buyout is a relatively modest $7 million if he left this year.

Cignetti is making $9 million a year in salary and retention bonus in an 8-year deal starting this year, and his buyout would be $6 million this year.

Ruhle is in the middle of an 8-year, $74 million contract, and his buyout would be $49.6 million this year. Ouch.

PSU considers themselves at least the equal of The OSU, and MI. However, never knew PSU had aTm stupid money to blow - +$49M in dead money is staggering, even for a PSU. As one of the CFB beauty pagent darlings though, I'm certain they believe they are entitled to more. - Most likely conferred with ESPN/ Disney before the firing. When you're a CFB beauty pagent darling, dreams come true no matter what.

They're 3-3 -- not even in the fine print of the polls -- and going nowhere.
