How do you know he's a great guy? CuriousMichael Scarn wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:50 pm I like Skip. I know he is a great guy. But regarding managing, what makes him so desirable to be the field manager of a team? Is his baseball insight that impressive? Not complaining, just wondering.

His parents named him Skip. He was destined from birth to be a manager.

He's little, white, and wasn't a very good player. That qualifies him, doesn't it?

Fans like the nickname type guys .. Skip Whitey Red
Jared, Dorrel , & Albert Fred don't have the same ring for fans.
Would you rather have a George Herman or 'Babe' ?

Well when you have the Marmot as your teams manager, the ability to spell MLB makes Skip desirable as your team leader.

You beat me to it! Hahaha. Anyone looks like a good manager next to Oliver Marmol. That guy acts like he couldn't find the dugout most days. Often, the tv camera catches him awkwardly gazing at the crowd during the game. Like he's searching for the cotton candy vendor. What a pud.

He's an imposter! (Just like our current manager, but that's another story!)Absolut wrote: ↑07 Oct 2025 15:42 pmParents named him Jared. He’s living a lie!BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑07 Oct 2025 10:31 amHis parents named him Skip. He was destined from birth to be a manager.

Guess we’ll find out after his stint with the Rangers.Michael Scarn wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:50 pm I like Skip. I know he is a great guy. But regarding managing, what makes him so desirable to be the field manager of a team? Is his baseball insight that impressive? Not complaining, just wondering.

Re: what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
I think Skip--rightly--gets a good rap for a lot of reasons.
Spent a good chunk of his career under a legendary manager, and was very much someone who would do whatever was needed to win. I can't remember a time where Skip really let the side down with his play. There were definitely times when he didn't come through, but none of them were moments where he dropped the ball, no pun intended. He never threw the ball to the wrong base, or lost focus on the field. I always remember Skip taking GOOD at-bats. He never struck out much, and seemed to have a fairly healthy on base percentage, too. He was never going to be any team's best bat, but he was also not going to be someone that was a gimme out. I think it's more than fair to say that he did as much with his limited talent that he possibly could have. And nobody like that does that by accident. It's a total cliche to say, but he was the epitome of a scrappy player that this city loves to love.
A lot of the above could describe a lot of players who've managed. But Skip also did his time in the trenches as a coach. Started as a special assistant, became a base coach for a few seasons, was an "associate" head coach (I guess that's a bench coach?) for a few seasons, was a bench coach here, turned in a good season with the Marlins after that...a team that was NOT supposed to be good, and then when the Marlins did what the Marlins ALWAYS do--sell off anyone with a pulse--he had a bad season.
So he's done his time. He's seen some highs, and he's seen some lows. When I see Schu, I think of what Mike Matheny COULD have been if he wasn't immediately given the big job.
