what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
I like Skip. I know he is a great guy. But regarding managing, what makes him so desirable to be the field manager of a team? Is his baseball insight that impressive? Not complaining, just wondering.
Re: what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
For people on this forum, i think it’s nostalgia. They liked the blue collar guy who, while he didn’t have a ton of ML talent, got the most of what he did have and the cardinals had a lot of success while he was here.
I also think a lot of people feel that a guy like Skip must be very baseball savvy in order to have had an 11 year career with a below average bat, average at best defensive skills, and average speed. He must have done the little things to make himself valuable and those are transferable skills to the dugout
Idk. That’s my take.

He spent 6 yrs (in the majors) playing for and watching and learning from TLR and Dave Duncan...not to mention Carp, Waino, Yadi and Albert to name a few. If he interviews well and knows the game he could be highly coveted.... just my thoughts but i of course don't know the man.

I don’t know Personally A lot of people inside the game think he is a great manager though oli himself said he learned a lot from himMichael Scarn wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:50 pm I like Skip. Didn't he take the Marlins to the postseason in his first season as manager? I know everything fell apart in year 2 and if I recall, they got smoked in the playoffs, but I thought they at least made it, which was highly unexpected that season.greyhawk wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 15:24 pm He spent 6 yrs (in the majors) playing for and watching and learning from TLR and Dave Duncan...not to mention Carp, Waino, Yadi and Albert to name a few. I heard him tell a story somewhere that he got sent down 6 times before he made it as a fulltime player, and each time Tony gave him something specific he needed to work on. That to me is an interesting enough perspective to bring with you into a manager seat.

yes and didn't he also win manager of the year for that?blackinkbiz wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 15:34 pmDidn't he take the Marlins to the postseason in his first season as manager? If he were selected to manage this team, people would be gushing until he experiences a challenge and loses. Then they would loathe him.
Re: what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
I don't believe he is ?
Re: what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
Utility players and the like often make the best managers. Herzog and LaRussa were not good players but great managers.
Pujols probably wouldn’t be a great manager as the game came super easy for him. Catchers seem to make good managers. Yadi could be great!

I was impressed with that season with the Marlins. A little surprised that they pulled the plug on him so quick after that.
I don’t know if he would be the answer in St. Louis but if I was forced to choose between him and Oli I’d take Skip.
Re: what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
I like that Skip played his formative years under Tony La Russa. Experienced ups and downs as a player trying to stick in the show and knows 1st hand what it takes to make it. Putting together an 11 year MLB career playing OF and 2B while collecting 2 WS rings along the way in ‘06 and ‘11. That’s grit and determination, a baseball man.
Assistant manager roles in San Diego and St Louis before taking the head job in Miami. Guided that team to the playoffs in his first season while winning NL manager of the year. Then the GM that hired him stepped down and the new guy decided not to keep him after a really down 2nd season.
He was in an advisory role for the Rangers last year, where I’m sure he had some interaction with Bochy or was at least close enough to observe the operation 1st hand.
There’s a lot to like on that resume in my eyes. I was hoping the Cards were going to pursue him to take over here. Good luck to him, go do your thing Skip!

Re: what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
While both played for the Cardinals, I think the glaring difference here is MM had never managed before. That was an easy fall back complaint for plenty of people when the going got tough under MM's watch. Skip at least cut his teeth as an assistant manager in San Diego and St Louis before winning NL manager of the year in Miami.
Re: what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
Yadi will never manage the Cardinals. He is not in good standing with the owners as they want someone they can control. They were glad when he retired as they could not get rid of him. He only comes around when he feels like it.
Re: what Makes Skip Schumacher such a coveted manager?
They would still spit venom whenever Skip faces a challenge and loses. Experience has never mattered in loathing.rage-STL wrote: ↑07 Oct 2025 09:09 amWhile both played for the Cardinals, I think the glaring difference here is MM had never managed before.
