Sabres currently have 4 goalies on one ways
UPL ( IR )
Georgiev
Levi
Lyon
Weird claim by them something is up
This tells me there’s a good chance Ellis will find himself on waivers again once UPL is healthy and we can simply claim him back and then send him to Springfield.
No guarantee that happens but that sort of thing happens pretty often. Let’s hope we can get him back relatively soon.
Its weird so they are going to carry 4 goalies for 30 days (not counting UPL who is stashed on IR) why would they claim Ellis only to waive later when they have 1 way depth at the position. Why didn't they waive Lyon or Georgiev couple days ago. They gotta move one of those guys out AND carry Ellis on the roster for a bit here only to waive him later, Weird one what am I missing.
Many here are misunderstanding the 30 day rule. The Sabres don’t have to keep him on their roster for 30 days. They could put him back on waivers tomorrow if they wanted.
The 30 days has to do with recalls. If a player that cleared waivers is recalled, that team can then send him back down without him having to pass through waivers as long as he hasn’t been on the NHL roster for 30 days or 10 games (whichever comes first). Since Ellis didn’t pass through waivers, this doesn’t even apply to him.
Also, they’re not going to carry 4. Georgiev sucks and they’ll just waive him I bet. And UPL will go on IR, opening a roster spot. They’ll just have to send a waiver exempt guy or two down today to have a compliant 23-man roster before Georgiev clears waivers and UPL can be placed on IR.
Sorry for the dumb question, but if the Sabres send Ellis down when UPL moves off IR, 1) do the Blues have the first choice on him and 2) if they were to claim him, he doesn't have to clear waivers to be sent to Springfield?
If Buffalo puts Ellis back on waivers, the Blues would have the first shot at him and be able to assign him directly to Springfield as long as they were the only team to put in a claim on him.
For example, if Buffalo puts Ellis back on waivers and both the Blues and let’s say…Philly both put in a claim for Ellis, Philly would get Ellis.* Ellis would then go to Philly’s NHL roster and the process would start all over again. If only the Blues put in a claim, then the Blues would get him and they’d have the option to either add him to the NHL roster or send him to the AHL without again having to clear waivers.
*prior to Nov 1, the priority list is simply the inverse of the 2024-25 standings. Starting on Nov 1, it goes by this year’s standings (points %, not points).
Thanks for clarification on 30day rule makes sense. Lets assume they waive Fourgiev. Stash UPL. Now its Levi, Lyon and Ellis (They are still carrying an extra goalie to start the season...strange but ok. I don't see the point there if they have UPL coming off IR eventually and Levi who has massive upside. And they just signed Lyon to a 2yr deal this summer. Why claim Ellis just to waive him quickly in short order? Not saying that wont happen, but whats the point? They must be really high on Ellis and willing to waive Lyon (as well as Georgiev) is the only thing I can think of. Unless I am missing something and they were just super eager to claim Ellis and waive him for no reason. Make it make sense!!
Levi was assigned to the minors. He’s waiver exempt.
So it’ll be Lyon and Ellis in Buffalo for now. Once UPL comes off IR…we’ll see.
This was a possibility and discussed here previously after the those youtubers with the muppet voices postulated that Edmonton was going to snag him. A move borne out by Buffalo's frustration with goalie performance in camp. Lyon's contract is 1.5 aav -- not a big deal if he passes waivers to the Amerks. Ellis is younger with big upside. He is going to be given the chance to outplay Lyons (which is a very distinct possibility). Ellis primed for a 1B position now. Good move by Adams. Bad for us. Do not see him going back on waivers.
Maybe. You seem to be treating it like a foregone conclusion Ellis will outplay Lyon and they’ll end up keeling Ellis over Lyon. I wouldn’t be so sure. I have no idea what Buffalo’s plans are but they don’t even have a back to back until Oct 25. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ellis just rides the pine for the most part. Buffalo is under a lot of pressure to finally end their no playoff streak so I’d be a little surprised to see them hand over the reigns to a goalie with 0 NHL minutes played.
A lot will depend on the severity and length of UPL’s injury.

True points. Pessimism on my part. Lyons has been really mediocre in the preseason and things did not end well for him in Detroit. Inked as the starter against the Rangers tomorrow night so we shall see. Wondering if the Sabres had an opportunity to take Primeau over Ellis ? That seems to be similar situation in Toronto guessing Woll is out for a longer period.

How we will be fine long-term...
If Hofer is better than Ellis
How we will be Barbarshev'd/Mikola'd again...

My only question is this....
Where is the young prospect that the Blues can steal for cheap off waivers? Army, where are you?
Idk, where are they? Does one such player exist? What young player do you think he should have plucked from waivers? Or are you once again just complaining about Army with no real substance behind it?
Well this sucks. Hate losing a goalie prospect like Ellis after waiting several years for him to show promise. The Blues would have felt comfortable bringing Ellis up if anything happened to Binner/Hofer this year. Now they may need to look outside the organization if that were to happen. Good luck to Ellis in Buffalo.

Elllis (25) is 3 months younger than Hofer (25). Hofer is better. It's good that you can't keep guys in the minors forever. This is how the waiver rules are supposed to work. Ellis will be 27 before Hofer and Binner's current contracts expire. I agree with wishing Ellis good luck wherever he gets his NHL chance. I am agreeing with you. Tone is hard to hear in posts.

Luckily the Blues also have Will Cranley who they are also high on they were going to have to find presumably another AHL team for him, ala Binnington but now my guess is Zherenko and Cranley are the Springfield tandem
The problem is neither one of those guys are NHL ready so the Blues will most likely have to go out and sign a vet for the AHL roster to be the #3 in case of an injury.

I don't know that I would of been in that position.
I wonder if they tried to move him and couldn't find a taker. I would've packaged him with a prospect or two that are expendable...losing a #3 goalie for nothing is wasted time.
I’m reasonably confident neither the Sabres nor any other club told the Blues they were going to claim him so now you are expecting them to proactively trade him just in case he was claimed when maybe no one would. Waivers are always a crapshoot as you just never know for sure if any player will get claimed.
As for Nutjob, I’d be curious how he’d make sure he wasn’t in this position if he was running the Blues.

See any great young players there that are clearly better than what we already have Army should’ve taken?
What I see is a 3-step, over and over.
Step 1. We lose young players because Army just can't possibly hold onto them for an assortment of reasons. Each time it happens I'm irritated that WE ARE NEVER on the winning side of these young casualties. Never.
Step 2. The young player plays a key role on a Stanley Cup championship.
Step 3. The young player signs massive deals with the Stanley Cup team.
Key Question:
How can a star-studded championship team make room for the young players that we can't hold?
Regarding the waiver wire.... I suspect that no team jumped for joy when Mikola's name hit the wire. Florida did because they know talent.

Ellis was blocked.

Some will see a caboose in front of an engine, and claim that the engine is "blocked", and therefore the engine is not needed.
Others will realize that the engineer has to keep the best parts on the track. That's his job.
The acquisition of Broberg and Holloway are 1000% different than Ellis.
Ellis was acquired for NOTHING AT NO RISK. Ellis was acquired via normal processes that can be counted on every year.
Army took large risks to acquire Broberg and Holloway, and he used abnormal processes that are hardly ever successful.

Was there a time a couple of years ago that Zherenko was more highly regarded as a prospect than Ellis? Obviously Ellis passed him if that was the case and earned most of the starts in Springfield. I thought Zherenko may opt for the KHL this year, but I'm glad now that he stayed with the Blues. Maybe now Zherenko can improve his prospect standing if he gets most of the Springfield starts this year.

First, you are making a mountain out of a waiver wire prospect. Second, you are beating a negativity narrative I do not subscribe to in its intent or propriety. Third, you're just wrong, wrong headed.
Most of us probably wish Ellis hadn't gotten away until we knew more about his NHL potential. Most of us generally understand how pro sports work as a business. Most of us understand the most important thing here is the NHL team, not an individual depth prospect.

No use in arguing w a pigeon. No matter what they'll puff their chest out, chirp and then (bleep) all over the board.
Agree with you and others on the point of this is how it works and it's good to see Ellis get some sort of opportunity. Goalies are a strange bunch.
