Yeah if at any point the Sabres want to send him down he has to go back on waivers.

And Levi...stlblue06 wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 13:48 pmIt sounds like they have to keep Ellis on the roster for 30 days before sending him down and he does have to pass through waivers to do that.
This is a desperate move by the Sabres but goalies are so hard to get a read on. Many of them just need the opportunity so I assume Ellis will get some games in. Maybe the Blues can claim him if Buff tries to send him down
They have 4 goalies on 1 ways obviously UPL is stashed on IR. They are going to have to move another goalie even to stash Ellis. Massive logjam

Ellis is 25. Hofer and Binner are under contract until Ellis is 27. It stings, but I hope Ellis gets a shot somewhere eventually.
Re: Ellis claimed by Sabres
I hate losing Ellis. I could see him being a starting goalie in this league.

Waivers are basically a way for the league to give guys who have reached a certain age and experience more chances to play in the NHL.
It’s also why the trade market for goalies like this isn’t terribly big. These guys have to either stick in the NHL or you risk losing them.
Toronto claimed Cayden Primeau from Carolina today. He just put up one of the most dominant stretches in the AHL in memory for Laval last year. Montreal traded him this summer for a 7th.

Its weird so they are going to carry 4 goalies for 30 days (not counting UPL who is stashed on IR) why would they claim Ellis only to waive later when they have 1 way depth at the position. Why didn't they waive Lyon or Georgiev couple days ago. They gotta move one of those guys out AND carry Ellis on the roster for a bit here only to waive him later, Weird one what am I missing.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 13:54 pmThis tells me there’s a good chance Ellis will find himself on waivers again once UPL is healthy and we can simply claim him back and then send him to Springfield.
No guarantee that happens but that sort of thing happens pretty often. Let’s hope we can get him back relatively soon.

Many here are misunderstanding the 30 day rule. The Sabres don’t have to keep him on their roster for 30 days. They could put him back on waivers tomorrow if they wanted.taynos wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:14 pmIts weird so they are going to carry 4 goalies for 30 days (not counting UPL who is stashed on IR) why would they claim Ellis only to waive later when they have 1 way depth at the position. The 30 days has to do with recalls. If a player that cleared waivers is recalled, that team can then send him back down without him having to pass through waivers as long as he hasn’t been on the NHL roster for 30 days or 10 games (whichever comes first). Since Ellis didn’t pass through waivers, this doesn’t even apply to him.
Also, they’re not going to carry 4. Georgiev sucks and they’ll just waive him I bet. And UPL will go on IR, opening a roster spot. They’ll just have to send a waiver exempt guy or two down today to have a compliant 23-man roster before Georgiev clears waivers and UPL can be placed on IR.

This is real disappointing.

Re: Ellis claimed by Sabres
This is a bummer because it kinda of blows up any bit of being creative moving forward depending on what level this blues team is really at. If the team is still building, I could see a world where they move on from Binner or at least ask him what he wants to do. If the team is really good I could have seen them resign binner for a few years and then shopped Hofer. In both those scenarios Ellis would have gotten the call up.
Now, if Hofer plays himself into a legitimate starting role, the Blues are going to be tasked with losing something and will be thin at the position. Somewhat of a bummer that a position of strength can flip that fast.

Doesnt matter for the Sabres. They had the best goalie the league (Hasek) and won nothing

Lol ok moron, are you implying Army should have traded Hofer to keep Ellis? Because that makes no sense

Luckily the Blues also have Will Cranley who they are also high on they were going to have to find presumably another AHL team for him, ala Binnington but now my guess is Zherenko and Cranley are the Springfield tandemSTL fan in MN wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:46 pmMany here are misunderstanding the 30 day rule. Yeah but Cranley hasn’t looked better than an average to slightly below average ECHL goalie to date. He looked good in the 2 Prospect Showcase games but that’s a really small sample size.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 15:02 pmLuckily the Blues also have Will Cranley who they are also high on they were going to have to find presumably another AHL team for him, ala Binnington but now my guess is Zherenko and Cranley are the Springfield tandemSTL fan in MN wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:46 pmMany here are misunderstanding the 30 day rule. But they’re going to need him to step up for sure. I like Zherenko a lot more than Cranley but will say it’s possible Cranley turns the corner. 2 years ago, Ellis was just a pedestrian ECHL goalie too.
But this will hurt Springfield for sure. Ellis was their team MVP last season and deservedly so. Hopefully the Sabres put him back on waivers when UPL is healthy and we can get him back eventually.

Re: Ellis claimed by Sabres
Sorry for the dumb question, but if the Sabres send Ellis down when UPL moves off IR, 1) do the Blues have the first choice on him and 2) if they were to claim him, he doesn't have to clear waivers to be sent to Springfield?STL fan in MN wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:46 pmMany here are misunderstanding the 30 day rule.
