So are all the elite talents headed to the larger markets?
Forever more, will we get the Kyrous while the big cities get the McDavids?
That model is not going to work for me.
cry about it. every day. i know you will.
sounds like a good deal. goblin goo is gone for good! he can't be a fan of a mid major market. Love it.
Any who, I did post yesterday that it does seem like the right model is to get these guys under contract early, take the gamble. There are always going to be the haves and have nots. So you have to work under your constraints. It's like what is going on in Carolina. They are really the model of a team who is trying to get it right, even tho they can't make the big splash contract. They get the books right, and they try to put together the right pieces. I'm usually rooting from a far for them when the Blues are out, but they haven't quite figured it out.
Outside of the information all being leaked, this is probably a net win for the mild coming out of the cap hell they have been dealing with. If they pivot in the right direction, they can get the ball rolling.

Sources say #mnwild superstar Kirill Kaprizov’s camp turned down an extension offer believed to be 8-years, $128 million in a meeting on Tuesday in Minnesota that would have made him the highest-paid player in #NHL history in both AAV ($16 million) and total dollars.
Price of star players is getting ready to skyrocket. The NFL top players bring in 17% of the cap space and they have 52 other players to sign. The NBA top players get 30% of the cap space and they have 14 other players. The NHL will plateau around 25% which would be top tier contracts in the $22-25M/yr range. That would put the next tier which Kaprizov is in would be in the $15-18M range.
The NHL already addressed the Max contract issue(all the way back in 2005).
The Max contract in the NHL is 20% of the total cap. At the moment, that amount is 19.1 mil.
That 20% number was set when the cap was $39M per team, are you sure it is the same in the upcoming contract? Would be good if that is still in the new CBA, though I could see someone like McD sign a contract that is 20% and stays at that percentage when the cap goes up.

It hasn't changed as of last year.
I also don't see anything in the new CBA to indicate that it's been changed. Although, with as fluid as this CBA seems to be, that could change at any moment(it will be fairly big news if it does).
Boy, it sure seems like he wants out of Minnesota. Or, he doesn't want 8 years given his age, and would prefer something shorter term and then sign another contract for big bucks later. Either way, sucks for Minnesota but is good for teams like the Blues.

This is why I like the way the Blues do business. Did they gamble on Kyrou? Sure. Did they give Buchy maybe a bit too much. Yep. But they got really good players on good contracts. The Blues operate under a model that is appropriate for them. I don't know why this is happening to the Mild, as it's a good hockey market. But it's not a Boston or Toronto or the Rags etc etc. If they can't sign him with that offer, that is unlucky. It's why the Hurricanes have such a nice operation going. But for whatever reason you can't get a guy like Rantanen to want to extend there even when you are offering the big bucks. You have to do business that works in your market.
I always found it crazy that people would complain about the deals Kyrou or Thomas got. Compared to what’s coming down the road for Kaprisov or McJesus or what guys like Matthews got, 8M is peanuts.
Comparing Thomas and Kyrou (and their deals) is like comparing Ohtani and Brendan Donovan.

I would rather have players signed and happy than one “superstar” holding the team hostage
So in other words, you would prefer to be held hostage by a happy Buchnevich for 8 years, than a sad Kirill for a month.
Yes
held hostage.. lolz
I mean hostage isn't that far off.
Minnesota is essentially stuck in limbo with him. Everyday he doesn't sign is a day his value decreases or they are unsure of what to do with him.
If he is there at the trade deadline, they likely get a decent return, but imagine both him and McDavid being on the trading block? It's an absolute possibility.

they are talking about Buch holding the Blues 'hostage' for the length of his contract.. ridiculous, but considering the source...
