MIN just stopped paying on Parise and Suter's contracts (which were half the AAV they're offering Kaprizov) this season, and they go and offer this guy the moon. Wild fans were booing Suter every game in their building. They should be thankful the league capped years on contracts!

Thomas was [extrapolated to 82 games] a 95 point center. Quibbles over a good 2-way 95 point center vs a 112 point winger? Did people get down on Patrice Bergeron? Blues can win with their guy.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 16:45 pmThey might not be but I’d definitely take the 2 of them combined at $16M over Kaprisov at $16M.ManitobaBlues wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 16:37 pmKyrou and Thomas are nowhere near McDavid, Matthews, and Kaprisov. Kyrou and Thomas will never get a contract like them 3 will.netboy65 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 13:16 pmI always found it crazy that people would complain about the deals Kyrou or Thomas got. Compared to what’s coming down the road for Kaprisov or McJesus or what guys like Matthews got, 8M is peanuts.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 11:48 am This is why I like the way the Blues do business. Did they gamble on Kyrou? Sure. Did they give Buchy maybe a bit too much. Yep. But they got really good players on good contracts. The Blues operate under a model that is appropriate for them. I don't know why this is happening to the Mild, as it's a good hockey market. But it's not a Boston or Toronto or the Rags etc etc. If they can't sign him with that offer, that is unlucky. It's why the Hurricanes have such a nice operation going. But for whatever reason you can't get a guy like Rantanen to want to extend there even when you are offering the big bucks. You have to do business that works in your market.
This is a Blues forum, the more the opponents pay their star players the better for us.

Looooocheeeeeech!!!!aslord wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 16:30 pm Every time he steps on the ice now it will be a question if this is the day he gets an injury that derails the potential of that massive contract. He may be a great player, but he's one stupid hit away from having his knees buckled and losing everything. Not a gamble I would take.

Price of star players is getting ready to skyrocket. The NFL top players bring in 17% of the cap space and they have 52 other players to sign. The NBA top players get 30% of the cap space and they have 14 other players. The NHL will plateau around 25% which would be top tier contracts in the $22-25M/yr range. That would put the next tier which Kaprizov is in would be in the $15-18M range.TBone wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 11:23 am Frank Seravalli

Sources say #mnwild superstar Kirill Kaprizov’s camp turned down an extension offer believed to be 8-years, $128 million in a meeting on Tuesday in Minnesota that would have made him the highest-paid player in #NHL history in both AAV ($16 million) and total dollars.

The NHL already addressed the Max contract issue(all the way back in 2005).rezero wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 19:21 pmPrice of star players is getting ready to skyrocket. The Max contract in the NHL is 20% of the total cap. At the moment, that amount is 19.1 mil.

Agree. Tough to turn that down. He either isn't a fan of MN or is waiting for McDavid.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 11:28 am Wowzers. Hard to turn that down.
Wonder if he actually wants more or if he is just planning to slow play it because he ultimately doesn’t want to hitch the rest of his career to the Mild.
He might also be waiting for McDavid to reset the market, idk.

Could be either of those or could also be Option C - he wants a shorter term. Do a 3-4 year deal and then try to cash in again.Section315 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 20:22 pmAgree. Tough to turn that down. So are all the elite talents headed to the larger markets?
Forever more, will we get the Kyrous while the big cities get the McDavids?
That model is not going to work for me.

Only superstars have even gone above 15% of the cap in the NHL. McDavid’s is currently the highest at 15.72% of the cap when he signed and he’s Exhibit A as to why a single player can’t win it all by himself. I’d be shocked if we saw a truly max contract in the NHL.rezero wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 19:21 pmPrice of star players is getting ready to skyrocket. Guerin says such "news" did not come from him or the agent. In video, he says he doesn't know where "this stuff comes from."

Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
What concerns me is this is implying the top 20-30 players in the NHL may be due $16 million plus yearly contracts. Kirill Kaprizov is 15th in scoring among forwards over the last five years and third among left wings. (I keep seeing articles say he is first for LW. I guess they don't account for Panarin or that Matthew Tkachuk is mostly a LW) With the points spread from 15-25 only about 30 points you could debate if anyone in the top 30 and top 10 in their position is worth that $16 million. One interesting example is Sam Reinhart and Kirill Kaprizov are separated by 20 points yet this would pay Kaprizov double Reinhart. There is a lot to debate in the "is the value of" Kaprizov double that of Reinhart conversation.
Honestly, as a team the Blues compete against I want to see the Wild sign Kaprizov to a budget crippling contact of even four years for this frequently injured aging player. That is good news for a points by committee team like the Blues that has to fight the Wild for a playoff spot.
