Friendship

Post by DJ Davis »

I am a big Tim Robinson fan, so I wanted to see this. However, I hadn’t read anything about. I wasn’t expecting it to be so uncomfortable, and maybe a bit more lighthearted.

If you’re a fan of Detroiters and I Think You Should Leave, a lot of the dialogue and plot points are clearly call outs to both shows.

It’s certainly funny at times. But it’s also one of those movies where you just keep shaking your head and asking, why are you doing this? Why did you say that?

Enjoyable overall, but not as enjoyable as I thought it would be.

Film definitely felt like an extended "I Think You Should Leave" sketch. Heavy on the absurdity and the cringe and I did laugh out loud a few times. The odd thing is that the writer/director of this movie does not appear to have worked with Tim Robinson before. I would have thought they would have been writing partners seeing how the type of "comedy" in this one felt like it belonged in Robinson's prior work.

From the trailer I get 'The Cable Guy' feel.

It is one of the most uncomfortable movies I have ever seen. I still don't know (two weeks later) if I liked it or not, but I think I did? Ha I love ITYSL and there are numerous call backs to it, but still it seems more painful & unbelievable to watch. It is on HBO Max now (or whatever they are calling it this week) if you want to check it out.
I will say, some hilarious lines.
Spoiler
When his crazy trip is going to Subway and ordering a sandwich, I laughed out loud for 2-3 minutes. So good. Also "I like to go in fresh" is something I can't stop saying.

I think it's about as good as an extended "I Think You Should Leave" skit can be, which is like 7/10 range for me. The last 5 minutes are pretty great though!
