Re: Top 15 blues goalies of all time
Other than Montreal, I wonder how many teams could make a list of say, eight guys, and have all rock solid players. Because I have to tell you, that list is kind of depressing. I don't doubt that Chris Mason was one of our better goalies but he was, in reality, just a guy. The only guys I can think of who were league wide names when they played for STL were Hall, Liut, Joseph, Fuhr, and Binnington.

most likely would have been an original 6 team, where talent was hoarded and restrictedBob39 wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 14:51 pm Other than Montreal, I wonder how many teams could make a list of say, eight guys, and have all rock solid players. dont forget a short stint with patrick lalime. Had an insane run then just sputtered outnetboy65 wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 11:10 amRemember when we got Jim “The Net Detective” Carrey? He had a decent first couple games then the bottom completely dropped outIsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 10:31 am A lot of recent bias in that list. Some solid yeoman goaltenders on not so great teams -- think Eddie Staniowski, Eddie Johnston, Jacques Caron, Phil Myre. My personal favorite and who did solid work on a horrible team -- Fred Braithwaite. None of these guys in top five but deserve mention for service.![]()

Patrick Lalime had a remarkable "run" with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1996-97 season, starting his NHL career with an NHL-record 16-game unbeaten streak for a rookie goaltender, going 14-0-2. He was selected by the Penguins in the 1993 draft and made his debut in November 1996. Despite this success, the Penguins and Lalime were unable to agree on a contract after the season, leading to his departure from the team.
Re: Top 15 blues goalies of all time
I'm assuming you meant to include Plante on your list. It's crazy to think Montreal was so deep that they had to get rid of Tony Esposito and Rogie Vachon to make room for Dryden. I will have to give some more thought to non-O6 teams that can list more than 6 true stud goalies.Bob39 wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 14:51 pm Other than Montreal, I wonder how many teams could make a list of say, eight guys, and have all rock solid players. Re: Top 15 blues goalies of all time
I had always thought that Plante was mostly finished by the time he came to St. Louis, but that was well before I was born so I would be happy to learn from fans of the time. Broudeur and Ryan Miller were also big names by the time they came to St. Louis, but neither gave much to the Note.fish wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 15:26 pmI'm assuming you meant to include Plante on your list. Re: Top 15 blues goalies of all time
The poster who named Hall as the best of all-time. Yes, three years is a short time period, but he was simply phenomenal. We were so overwatch in those three finals series it was laughable. Hall was so great he got the Conn Smyth despite being swept. I'm 77 and have seen every Blues goalie, and the first was the best.
Re: Top 15 blues goalies of all time
Boy, good points both ways, definitely a tough call. Hall had an incredible and distinguished career. I mean, there's only one "Mr. Goalie". Played parts of four seasons with the Note, totaling 140 games. Binner of course has a Cup to his name while playing for the Note, playing 336 games over seven seasons (not counting the one game he played in 2015-16). I give a slight edge to Hall, followed by Binner and Liut. I do expect, however, that Binnington moves to #1 when it's all said and done.netboy65 wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 09:35 amHall was indeed a great goalie but as far as the Blues are concerned I have to take points off for lack of longevity.DawgDad wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 08:51 am You guys are way off base. Top three:
Hall
Binnington
Liut
If you want to flip Hall and Binner I won't argue with you. Otherwise, kids, ask yourselves " Who is the only Blues goaltender to win a Vezina, AND a Conn Smythe?".
Yes, Hall was that good, far past his prime.

Oh for sure, interesting discussion and I’m inclined to believe both answers are correct.SRV1990 wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 16:32 pmBoy, good points both ways, definitely a tough call. I lean toward Binner myself, A Cup and all-time leader in wins.
Re: Top 15 blues goalies of all time
OK, so are we saying who was the best goalies to wear the Blue Note? or the best goalies FOR THE BLUES??
If it's the first, It's more of a who's who at the end of the road, have a cup of coffee.
1. Brodeur
2. Hall
3. Plante
everyone else
If we're talking best goalie FOR THE BLUES
1. Binner
2. Joseph (14 less wins than Liut in 67 less games. Liut has 34 more losses)
3. Fuhr
4. Liut
5. Moose
6. Puddles
7. Hall
8. Mace
9. Starter Hutton
10. Brent Johnson
Just my opinion, I was blown away that 1993-94 season, Cujo set the record for wins in a season at 36 (It's now 2nd). He also set a franchise record for Shots Faced at 2382! Put it in perspective, Binners disastrous 2022-23 season he faced 1826. Which is 10th highest in franchise history. I hate Mike Keenan, Cujo was a BEAST for the Blues.

I still have Hall and Binner 1-2 or 2--1. They have all the hardware, a Vezina, Conn Smythe (in a losing effort), and a Cup.TAFKAP wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 18:18 pm OK, so are we saying who was the best goalies to wear the Blue Note? or the best goalies FOR THE BLUES??

That's why I try to use the caveat IMHO, I'm for sure not telling you you're wrong. I have zero frame of reference for the early days. I will readily admit it's a blind spot.DawgDad wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 18:24 pmI still have Hall and Binner 1-2 or 2--1. Re: Top 15 blues goalies of all time

Gotta include Jacques.
And unless you saw Hall play as a blue, your list is flawed.
The only goalie to ever win most valuable player in the Stanley Cup playoffs, on the loosing team!
Re: Top 15 blues goalies of all time
Also Jacques Plante. Both he and Hall received the Vezina Trophy for the 1968-69 season. I'm not saying either should be called the top of list for the Blues, but they are both deserving of being in the upper tier, not just for their career accomplishments but for also the team making it into the Stanley Cup Finals and keeping scores competitive.Bob39 wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 14:51 pm Other than Montreal, I wonder how many teams could make a list of say, eight guys, and have all rock solid players. wow.. how did they not get killed wearing that (bleep) equipment? I know shooters weren't elevating shots much back then, but still..
