The question truly is- what holds this team together.
If this was the 2004 team, yes, dimmed success at .500. But if this was the 2011 team, .500 was a realism.

It’s all in one’s perspective, dawg. Some people enjoy watching the young players who are striving to achieve their highest MLB ceiling as they approach their most productive MLB years. And who also enjoy following the minor leaguers who are developing as they come through the system. Seems to me it’s far more enjoyable and constructive than consistent depressing, destructive negativity.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 08:44 amGood write.OldRed wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 08:39 amI'm an old "die hard" fan that has seen the good and the bad thru the years. It has a place for some markets. .500 should NEVER be considered a measure of success in St. Louis. The owner even said so back when he cared and he fired Mike Matheny.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 08:43 amI hear ya. .500 is mediocre. Especially with a franchise of such great expectations. I remember many years of the climb to just reach .500. Seemed Herculaneum.
I also think it’s a measure of season success. For many teams. It has a place.
As for the fans, they are tired of living in the 70’s/90’s type environment. Many haven’t seen it like this. Could get worse.

In 10 years as a major league manager, Mike Matheny won 756 games and lost 693. Career .522 winning percentage.desertrat23 wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 08:57 amIt has a place for some markets. .500 should NEVER be considered a measure of success in St. Louis. He also cost us a World Series one year and an NLCS the following year because of his weak tactical skills. But this isn’t about Matheny — it’s about an owner who cared about living up to the standards of the Cardinals, which is something he is no longer interested in doing.Cranny wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 09:04 amIn 10 years as a major league manager, Mike Matheny won 756 games and lost 693. Can’t do it through FA signings. Only through prospect development and trades.
Re: We are watching a AAA team
Here we go again, another thread hi-jacked about how great Matheny was as a manager.

The word “Matheny” does not require a full-throated defense of the man. I mentioned him only in the context of when BDW commented that being .500 was not acceptable.

Re: We are watching a AAA team
How far did you want a thread claiming that a club playing .500 was AAA caliber to go?
In the old days when we had a mediocre club we simply grinned and bore it until the team got better which it always did....eventually. This team will do the same in a few years. There's plenty of talent waiting in the wings.
I get that an 80 year old doesn't have much patience for mediocrity, but it isn't like the team isn't competitive or isn't attempting to get better. Denying that is disingenuous.
Re: We are watching a AAA team
Wow.
Desertrat used DeWitt’s own words from when DeWitt fired Matheny, and you immediately spout your Matheny mantra.
You just can’t help yourself Cranny.

Well, one can constantly complain (which solves nothing), or one can dig into the facts to see how the higher level prospects are responding to the increase in traveling specialty instructors and enhanced training equipment.OldRed wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 12:16 pmI believe the lack fans attending games this have spoken. It’s always amazing to me how eager you are to give these people credit for putting out a fire that they intentionally started.Cranny wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 12:47 pmWell, one can constantly complain (which solves nothing), or one can dig into the facts to see how the higher level prospects are responding to the increase in traveling specialty instructors and enhanced training equipment.OldRed wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 12:16 pmI believe the lack fans attending games this have spoken.
