Bloom needs to get a #2 type starting pitcher for Donovan

Re: Bloom needs to get a #2 type starting pitcher for Donovan
Bloom needs to make a trade similar to the Arozarena for Liberatore trade. Only that the pitcher be farther along than Liberatore was at the time of the trade. Maybe an AAA type at around 24 with Liberatore type potential. I see Liberatore as a # 3 or 4 type MLB starter. Could Nootbaar bring back something similar to Liberatore? If so, that would be the kind of trade needed, among others.

So Bloom needs to make a trade similar to one that currently looks likely to wind up being a net loser for the Cardinals?Shady wrote: ↑06 Sep 2025 11:56 am Bloom needs to make a trade similar to the Arozarena for Liberatore trade. I thought you liked to aim higher with your usual trade proposals wherein the Cardinals get a “young, cost-controlled #1 or #2 starting pitcher” for a bag of balls.

This sort of supports my OP. Except the writer suggests a possible a mid level starter for Donovan. Would that be about like where Gray actually is, right now? https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/ml ... 8a496&ei=9

Re: Bloom needs to get a #2 type starting pitcher for Donovan
Not reading your worthless MSN link, but Donovan and a good prospect could probably net a mid-tier starter that has minimal team control, unless it’s an inflated salary dump situation.Shady wrote: ↑06 Sep 2025 13:40 pm This sort of supports my OP. If you want a solid starter with several years of control it’s going to take Donovan, another one of our young MLB roster players with actual upside like Liberatore or Winn, plus a high-end prospect. Good cost-controlled pitching is a highly expensive commodity.
And sorry, but Burly or Sagesse won’t move the needle.

Re: Bloom needs to get a #2 type starting pitcher for Donovan
The Cards should be looking at prospects like Robby Snelling of the Marlins. He is their fifth ranked prospect and second highest pitching prospect. They have a lot of young players like the Cardinals that have not yet gotten over the proverbial hump. Whether they are a looking for a young veteran like Donovan who can potentially stabalize the team or want to add more prospects to their pile like say Walker plus another prospect, I have no idea. But it seems that a pitcher like Robby Snelling who could be a #2 and should be ready for the MLs opening day of 2026 is the type of guy the Cards should be targeting. The Marlins have enough of a surplus in pitching, they might be willing to deal him. Assuming the Cards don't want to spend dollars this off season, this is the type of trade that could make the team both immediately better and better for the long run.
Re: Bloom needs to get a #2 type starting pitcher for Donovan
A post that makes some sense. Find a team with some pitching surplus that needs some offensive help. The Marlins might just be a match.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑06 Sep 2025 14:07 pm The Cards should be looking at prospects like Robby Snelling of the Marlins. These are the only types of moves that make any sense under the current set of circumstances.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑06 Sep 2025 14:07 pm The Cards should be looking at prospects like Robby Snelling of the Marlins. Re: Bloom needs to get a #2 type starting pitcher for Donovan
Like others have said, we aren’t getting a #2 for next year in trade for 1 year of Donovan. I like Donovan but teams don’t normally trade away pitching like that for 1 year of a player. I would say the more likely scenario is Donovan and Nootbar are traded for prospects.
Bloom will be forced to sign 2 SP similar to Gibson Lynn in 2024.
We don’t have any SP depth that is ready. Think Scherzer and Tyler Anderson to go with Gray Libby and McGreevy. Hopefully one of our minor league SP is ready by June.

No, but lets say the Cards can trade for a Bobby Snelling like I suggested above. Then lets give Leahy a chance to start. So next years rotation isIndCard75 wrote: ↑06 Sep 2025 23:39 pm Like others have said, we aren’t getting a #2 for next year in trade for 1 year of Donovan. 1 Gray
2 Liberatore
3 McGreevy
4 Snelling
5 Leahy
Pallante is the swingman while we are waiting on Mathews and Doyle to develop. Snelling may or may not develop into a true #2/#3. If he does, great. If not, we tried. Leahy also may develop into quite a good SP. Then they need to sign 2 Phil Matons to round out the bullpen. While that staff may not sound exciting, at least it has some upside potential compared to this year's staff. Liberatore and McGreevy should hopefully improve some. Snelling and Leahy may be better than we hope. I would not go out and sign veteran starters unless it is desparation. They need to find young guys with upside and see what they can do.
With the above rotation, hopefully Doyle and Mathews are ready by 2027. Then there will be competition to get in the rotation. In addition, perhaps Roby and Hjerpe can stay healthy and also compete.

It's only smart to trade for pitching prospects. We have to re-establish a development system that churns out pitching. The money we do have will be spent to plug holes in the lineup.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑06 Sep 2025 14:07 pm The Cards should be looking at prospects like Robby Snelling of the Marlins. It starting to seem like Brycen Mautz might be ready by 2027, too. He's 24 and pitched well at AA this season. With 7 wins 3 losses 3.04 ERA.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑07 Sep 2025 00:16 amNo, but lets say the Cards can trade for a Bobby Snelling like I suggested above. Then lets give Leahy a chance to start. Good idea however I don’t see a low payroll team like the Marlins trading away a potential good SP for a one year rental.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑07 Sep 2025 00:16 amNo, but lets say the Cards can trade for a Bobby Snelling like I suggested above. Maybe a team like the Mets who can afford to buy pitching would be willing to trade a SP prospect for a package of Donovan Nootbar and Crooks. The Mets have several good SP prospects.

It wouldn't surprise me if Bloom does some"wheelin' and dealin'"with his former organizations. Re: Bloom needs to get a #2 type starting pitcher for Donovan
I wasn't suggesting what we traded to the Marlins would be a 1 year rental...You are right, the Mets have a couple good prospects, albeit, 1 of them McLean is on the ML roster and doing really well. The other Jonah Tong appears like he may be ready as of opening day 2026. The Mets need a CF and a catcher. We have two CFs in Scott and Church and obviously quite a few catchers. Trade might sting to give up 1 of Church or Scott plus Crooks. But, that is probably what this type of trade will look like.IndCard75 wrote: ↑07 Sep 2025 14:21 pmGood idea however I don’t see a low payroll team like the Marlins trading away a potential good SP for a one year rental.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑07 Sep 2025 00:16 amNo, but lets say the Cards can trade for a Bobby Snelling like I suggested above. Donovan and Nootbaar aren't FA's until 2028
Burleson 2029. For clarification.
