Call me when Winn does a backflip.Red Bird Classic wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 21:40 pmThe OP is right.
Winn has a much stronger arm. Is a better hitter. And has way more power. Smith had extreme range and was a top-notch baserunner.
Right now, Winn has had a better career at 23 than Smith had had at the same age.
The problem for Winn is that Smith inexplicably got better as he aged and was a better player at 36 and 37 than he was at 28. (well maybe it can be explained, but that's grist for another tread)
Because Smith's career arc was so bazar, it would be difficult for Winn to match him in total value. But at this moment Winn is ahead in almost every metric.

Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
Just watch Ozzie highlight reels and Mayson's 2024 highlight reels. Wow, does Mayson have an arm.
Great point by previous poster about Ozzie's carrer arc. If Mayson can continue to develop he's one of the few players that has a chance to be the next Ozzie.
Here's to hoping one day he runs out there and does a backflip in Ozzie's honor. Dang, that would be cool.

The simple truth is that natural players age quickly, and guys like Bonds and Clemons et. al., age more slowly and often peak after age 33. Smith fits with that later group.

Most unreal play I ever saw an infielder makescoutyjones2 wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 20:56 pm There's a play you will never ever see again..
Ozzie diving for a sharply hit ground ball going towards the bag...it takes a wild bounce and, while in mid dive, he plucks it with his bare hand and makes the play.

dude seriously? comparing Winn to Ozzie smith makes you seem like you have an extremely low baseball IQ. no offense
Winn has literally no chance to even be remotely close to Ozzie smith defensively in his career.

Good luck.Francis Park Thug wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 07:41 am Both are great defensively. Winn with the better arm by far.
Ozzie better range?
Winn the better hitter than Ozzie was at this age. Much more power for Winn.
Winn better average. Ozzie a much better base stealer.
You will be called names for starting any thread like this on this site.
Ozzie had exception range with a magical glove. Exceptional baseball sense, he
rarely if ever made a poor decision. Exceptional on the base paths. He benefited on both sides of the ball with turf.
He made all the lay ups and more exceptional plays than any in his time. He played on a
team that got as much attention as any including NY and LA.
He had a long career partially due to the era. I as well as many here benefited in being able
to watch him due to the era.
With the bat, Oz is closer to Scott than Winn at equal ages. Winn is better with the bat
at the same age. To the point if Winn was hitting like Oz plenty of people would want to
replace Winn. It's questionable whether Ozzie Smith or Omar Vizquel would be allowed the
same careers in the game today, but Winn would be excepted in their eras.

Oz to figure out hitting. He averaged a .611 OPS until 30 y/o.
The times allowed for GG over SS. I'm glad as we all should be.

It's a mistake to think steroids are just about power. Building muscle is only part of what roids do. Steroids also boost energy levels that help both in games and training to gain power. These chemicals also effect player aging curve, allowing a 35-year-old player to perform like a much younger 27-29 year-old player.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 14:50 pmHe hit 3 home runs one year and 0 the other year if he was using steroids he was using the wrong kind of steroidsRed Bird Classic wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 14:32 pmHe shares a career profile with known steroids users.3dender wrote: ↑19 Aug 2025 02:04 amAre you implying that Ozzie was doping?Red Bird Classic wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 21:40 pmThe OP is right.

While Smith's career arc is an extreme outlier among old timers and most modern players, his arc fits in well with known steroid users.
Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
Ozzie could get the ball to first just as quick as Winn. Ozzie had short quick release. Ozzie didn't have the arm but he would get rid of the ball quicker than anyone.icon wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 10:04 am Winn does make some plays in the hole that Ozzie would never make because of the difference in arm strength. And the arm is accurate as well.
Winn is the overall leader in OAA. I don't know where people get that his range isn't that great. You can't have that without range.
