Winn vs. Ozzie
Both are great defensively. Winn with the better arm by far.
Ozzie better range?
Winn the better hitter than Ozzie was at this age. Much more power for Winn.
Winn better average. Ozzie a much better base stealer.

No where close to Smith's defense. It will take a long career before a true judgment can be made. Hard to top a HOFer.Francis Park Thug wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 07:41 am Both are great defensively. Winn with the better arm by far.

No comparison
Other than Winn's arm it's Ozzie by a mile.

LoL. This can't be real...

Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
I like Winn, but until he can do this, hold the comparisons…
While listening to Cards broadcast on the radio, with Mike Shannon calling the action…
“Base hit up the middle, Ozzie gets it! Throws to first, out!”
Did you catch that, it was hit hard enough and through the hole for Shannon to call it a base hit, but Ozzie still got to it and threw him out.

Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
Winn does make some plays in the hole that Ozzie would never make because of the difference in arm strength. And the arm is accurate as well.
Winn is the overall leader in OAA. I don't know where people get that his range isn't that great. You can't have that without range.

So until he can play in front of a moderately drunk announcer who is barely watching the action as he calls it? Weird metric but okay.jwstlsan wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 10:00 am I like Winn, but until he can do this, hold the comparisons…

But I digress, it is way too early. He matches up well, but still way too early.

Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
Winn has potential. He could be better than Ozzie, He could be worse. At age 23 Winn has been the better hitter with more power. Ozzie stole more bases. Ozzie had 25 errors to Masyn's 3 at age 23. Masyn clearly the better arm. Ozzie more range maybe. At this point Winn is definitely in this conversation. I will take Tempy at age 23 over both.

Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
I think Winn will be a much better hitter, but Ozzie had more range and ability to make plays.
Going old school on stats, Ozzie, although averaging 23 errors per year ages 23-25, had an insane amount of putouts and assists, with 548, 555 and a career high 621 assists in roughly 1350 innings/yr. In that crazy 3rd year with 621 assists, he averaged .44 assists per inning, and not far off that in the other two years. He averaged 269 putouts in those three years.
In Winn's only full year in 2024, he had 191 putouts and 402 assists in 1285.1 innings - an average of .31 assists per inning. He's averaging .30 assists per inning this year.

Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
You’d think with John Kruk and Ozzie Smith anchoring this team the win total would be quite a bit higher
Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
Next time I see Ozzie, I will ask him if Winn is better than him defensively...I serve on a board with him.
Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
No comparison…when he came to STL on ASTROTURF he had 125 or so more assists than Winn…….the Wizard!!ClassicO wrote: ↑18 Aug 2025 12:00 pm I think Winn will be a much better hitter, but Ozzie had more range and ability to make plays.

Re: Winn vs. Ozzie
The only SS I've seen that compared to defensively Ozzie, for a very short stretch, was Brendan Ryan.
Hard to believe, and even harder to believe he never won a Gold Glove.
