Using the FanGraphs version of Wins Above Replacement, here’s a list of where individual Cardinals rank in fWAR among the 252 major-league players that have at least 250 plate appearances this season:
Masyn Winn, 23rd
Brendan Donovan, 72nd
Willson Contreras, 87th
Victor Scott II, 106th
Ivan Herrera, 119th
Alec Burleson, 151st
Lars Nootbaar, 159th
Nolan Arenado, 179th
Pedro Pages, 188th
Nolan Gorman, 200th
Jordan Walker, 242th
Notes: fWAR encompasses offense, defense and baserunning … Winn (3.5 fWAR) and Scott (1.have accrued most of their value on defense … Herrera’s 1.6 fWAR would be higher but his season has twice been interrupted by injuries … Alec Burleson has a low 1.1 fWAR, but that’s because of baserunning and defense …for the STL front office, it has to be at least a little disheartening to see the low-value seasons turned in by Gorman and Walker.

It doesn’t take into account age and how much they make. I can see it. Arenado sucks on offense but excels on defense still there’s some value in that. Gorman and walker suck on defense and offense so not much value thereJatalk wrote: ↑13 Aug 2025 21:11 pmDon’t put a lot of stock in WAR. You point out Gorman and Walker. More should be made of the older, more experienced, highly paid Arenado. 179th is pathetic considering the expectations.hmoss859 wrote: ↑13 Aug 2025 20:49 pm POSITION PLAYERS, OVERALL VALUE

Re: Here’s the position player breakdown-overall value
You need a top offense to win a modern WS (insofar as runs scored). The past 9 WS champs have been the #1 through #7 offense. Three times the winner has led MLB in runs scored; once the #2, twice the #3, twice #6 and once #7. The last time the Cards won a WS, they were #1 in the NL (pre-DH in the NL).
WAR is a good indicator for hitting and baserunning, but, as noted, the defense can skew those results.
The Cards have a long way to go to get to a top 7 offense (currently 18th). But that's where they need to be. It seems they either have very good defensive players who don't hit a lot or poor defensive players whose hitting is ... better, but not that of a "star."
I was glad they drafted Doyle, and also didn't mind them going for a big stick with Gorman and Walker, as you have to take a risk for a big bat drafting at #20/21.
There's hope with JJW, Bernal/Crooks and Josh Baez, but I don't see much beyond that.
