It is early still
Mizzou seem to have more success with the transfer portal. It seems that team got burned with some top notch recruits leaving after their freshman year.
Pinkel probably figures money is better spent in the transfer portal with guys with 1 to 3 year of experience and playing.

Uh…I agree with your thoughts. From where I sit, it seems coach Drink has been more effective recruiting in the TP, so that seems to be where they plan to spend the most. We’ll see.knttiger wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 11:05 am No question we have missed on some players we really wanted. I believe we are spending money on retention of the players contributing to wins on the field, and not throwing big money at the higher-ranked recruits. We got burned with 3 of our top rated stars last year, and it appears we are moving the biggest chunk of our NIL chest towards the portal and keeping what we have.
I'm not making excuses for these misses- they hurt. I think this is the reality we face with all these changes in player compensation, and with everyone else catching up with us on the NIL front. Win on the field, and win the portal. Drink appears all-in on that methodology. We will see if we can sustain a program that way.

Drinkwitz has said publicly that he prioritizes production (transfers) over potential (HS recruits).Sophrosyne wrote: ↑22 Jul 2025 17:15 pm

Think of the message this sends to HS prospects. The HC wants to fill holes on the roster with plug-and-play transfers, i.e., someone other than you.
College football is turning into a farm system. Players will go to 2nd and 3rd-tier schools where they can get playing time, hope they get noticed, and then transfer to Power Four schools.
Re: So many misses for Eli and MU
Drink is doing exactly what he should. To gullible HS stars MU is not a big brand and will go for the flash and smoke of their promises which don't always pan out nor do they. Makes practical sense to go after kids that have gotrdone at some level, you have film of going against other top players and have much better idea of how they would fit into your scheme. Better bang for program's bucks without any doubt.
I like direction he has the program going and the staff he has put together while he has slipped in CEO role which fits him better. He truly sucked as a schemer, playcaller/OC.
This will be crucial year for Kirby as he had meh year last where he wasn't aggressive at all and really didn't attack near enough and utilize the talent he had. Hopefully he spent time with his brother who held a masterclass in being OC last season and in super bowl. if he stays as conservative as he did, Brady's throwing limitations had big part I am sure, he will be gone back to lower level.

And Mizzou is taking this to the next level with 18 transfers from P4 schools.College football is turning into a farm system. Players will go to 2nd and 3rd-tier schools where they can get playing time, hope they get noticed, and then transfer to Power Four schools.
Re: So many misses for Eli and MU
HS recruiting is like going to the casino to roll dice - you never know what will come up. Better to see what a player has done against similar college competition. The young man from KC who didn't like most anything at Mizzou will now try to become a player for his HS assistant @ Nebraska. He has all the earmarks of a big dud. We shall see, going forward.
I personally think the TP strategy is better than hoping and praying on National Signing Day. Especially for the Mizzou's and Ole Miss' of the world. Unless you're Alabama, Georgia, or Ohio State, the 5-stars don't usually consider you as a destination. And look how the landscape has changed in Rocky Top, with their soap operas.

First you make college players professionals, then you allow them unlimited free agency. What's next, trades?
"We could use that edge guy you're not playing. What'll you take?" Twenty minutes later it's "Slug, see coach in his office and bring your playbook".

Re: So many misses for Eli and MU
Assuming or suggesting that Nwaneri may be a "dud", is pretty naive. The guy red-shirted and only played 38 snaps, still getting 1 sack and 1 tfl. He's now #2 DE on the Nebraska depth chart and expected to split time with a Junior DE, on a pretty decent D.skeezix wrote: ↑27 Jul 2025 08:24 am HS recruiting is like going to the casino to roll dice - you never know what will come up. As for where the top recruits are bound, you managed to hit 1 of the top 5. Those 5?
USC
Georgia
Texas
Texas A&M
and
Notre Dame.
Re: So many misses for Eli and MU
agreed. Those top ranked freshmen transferred out because they saw little playing time or none at all. Then the NIL cap is placed so the big money is going to the starters. These guys are getting beat out by upperclassmen that transfer in or been on the team for a couple of years. Looks like they would have remained down the depth chart for the foreseeable future. I remember Drink was asked by a reporter last training camp about the biggest prize recruit on how he was doing. Drink said "He is lacing up his shoes and showing up on time...." Now he ran off to Nebraska.knttiger wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 11:05 am No question we have missed on some players we really wanted. Drink is taking full advantage of the TP. It is like a goldmine for him.
