Is it to appease their (older) fanbase by always having a few "name" players, even if that only leads to consistent mediocrity on the field?

Yes, this reset/rebuild is a disaster.
Mainly it's a disaster because we haven't progressed from last season.
When I say that, I mean the young "talent" hasn't moved the needle.
So, we are back to square one in 2026.
Unless something changes the remainder of the year, I see no one at the MLB level to build around.
Let's hope JJ shines.
That will go a long way.
But let's face it, we need a few more.
In my opinion, we'd be just as well off had we sold some of these players last year.
Going 80-82 isn't any different that 70-92.
Either way, no playoffs.
Disagree. The whole point of the reset/rebuild it to finally figure out what we’ve got in the young guys.

So far, we know Walker and Gorman are both too inconsistent and injury-plagued to be relied on as core pieces for the time being. Same with Lars, but we kind of already knew that.

We found out that Liberatore can be a starter.

We found out that Pallante should not be a starter beyond this year.

We found out that Victor can be a difference maker on the basepaths but has a long way to go with the bat.

We found out that Herrera should be the DH and not see the field.

We found out the Pages is a backup catcher at best.

We confirmed Burly is a starting caliber bat who remains incredibly awkward in the field.

Winn remains an unanswered question but at least we know he’s an MLB caliber shortstop. If he can take the next step offensively he’s a star. Lots of players struggle in year 2 so I’m still bullish on this front

Now there’s still 2+ months left of season and plenty of time to get Walker more run, McGreevy more starts, and hopefully get a guy like Nathan Church some looks to figure out what’s there.

The season still could be a failure if they decide to learn nothing from this year and run it all back the same next year. But I don’t see that happening
Yes, I agree. We have learned a lot about the kids this year. Much of it has not been good news. Perhaps that is what the OP doesn't like so much. If we had been able to unload Nado last offseason, we would have gotten an even better look at the youngsters. I cant wait to see who eventually takes over for Nado at 3B.

I think ownership trusted a guy who had clearly been lapped by the field, and they prioritized loyalty which blinded them to the realities of how far they were falling behind. And they completely rid themselves of the concept of accountability. No repercussions for abysmal spending or talent evaluation. No more focus on winning. No urgency.

They replaced all that with basically “we hope this goes well” and “hopefully it gets better”.
You have to be pretty stupid not to see that Moe is a man with no vision. Look at all the stuff that he screwed up as time has gone by. There is no excuse for not reassigning him to save your franchise. The Longoria bidet must have an incredible Siren’s allure for Bill to be so blind for so long.

Houston was a sub-.500 team for six consecutive years before they got it right in 2015 and on the road to sustained success

Atlanta was a sub-.500 team for four consecutive years before they got it right in 2018

Philadelphia was a.500 or sub-.500 team for seven consecutive years before 2021

Baltimore was a sub-.500 team for five consecutive years before 2022

Deep rebuilds take time.
the last several years of the stl organizational reminds me of the stros pre crane/luhnow

a patch here, a patch there.....if we just get that guy, just get one more pitcher, sure, we can get another season or two out of these guys

we can't dump this guy.....he's a fan favorite

let's fire the manager

it all failed miserably

it wasn't until a stark change in leadership.....and owner.....that the philosophy changed,,,,,along with the patience and willingness to lose for as long as it takes....

bloom may be the guy who has the skills and balls to blow it up and start over.......but does ownership??
Your analogy has a bit of a Sliding Doors aspect to it: when Luhnow left for Houston, Mejdal, Elias and a whole host of others followed him in what was a massive brain-drain out of the Cardinals FO. The franchise continued to live off the fruits of the legacy minor league system for several years, but after 2015 you could see the atrophy fully setting in. In the 13+ years since that departure, the Cardinals have gone from the cutting edge to a laggard in the industry.

At the time, I was puzzled why the Cardinals weren’t more aggressive in trying to retain some of those people who followed Luhnow to Houston—surely there were promotions, job titles, and pay-raises available to keep several of them in St. Louis, but ownership and Mozeliak passively let them all walk out the door. The insularity and complacency of the organization since then have been its downfall.

As Mel loves to trumpet, this is a marketing organization. That is fine as long as you hire a good baseball management team and invest in the team. You cannot market a product no one wants to buy. BDW loves baseball history, so the cardinal museum and red jacket stuff is not only marketing, but history. OK, I get it. I grew up with my father telling me all about the old cardinal players and my Dad saw or listened to every WS the team was ever in. So BDW is of that generation and wants to celebrate, and market history. The problem is that they let the baseball side of things wither. They were great at real estate and ballpark village things, but if they had hired someone competent to run the baseball side of things a decade ago this probably would not have happened. So now they have hired Bloom and he has made some good hires. Let's see what happens. It will take a few seasons..... Maybe there will actually be a PLAN now.... I think they now have competent people, but will ownership actually spend the money to support them? They are spending on the minor league system and development, but will they restore payroll to 180M or more? We shall see...

Let's hope that's now changing w/the firing ("retirement" ) of Mo and hopefully Oli too.

the most frustrating thing about this organization has been the owners for many years now. Their run and time were up for some time now and not all fans realize this

the Cards will never win another NLCS until they get new owners. this was known years ago already.

nothing will ever change until this happens. the people who don't understand this still are the most frustrating thing about this organization.

The Cards owners are not serious about winning anymore and haven't been for a very long time now. They are instead focusing on maximizing their money.

if they wanted to win, they would simply spend more money on top free agents to get this club back on track competing for the Div title.

it was simply WAY too easy for me to predict the Cards would be fighting it out for near the bottom last place with the Pirates by seasons end.

+2!
It means you learn about players which means you learn if they are ones to keep or move before more prospects arrive to state their case!

Our talent assessment has been as bad as our talent development. Mo’s trade timing is just awful.
