Donovan is the heart of the team, and our most consistent player.
You build around, not through him.
Looking forward to seeing he and JJ on the infield together.![]()
But Donny is an all-star, gold glove winner and team leader, that's a piece you can build around (not THE PIECE by "a" piece).
The odds of landing even ONE starting position player or ONE starting pitcher that makes your rotation are slim at best!
Sure it happens, but there's also an extremely high failure rate too (Re: Mo's "haul" from his big 2023 sell-off of Jack Flaherty, Jordan Montgomery, Jordan Hicks, Paul DeJong, Genesis Cabrera, and Chris Stratton = NOTHING of value).
No way I deal away Donny who even after an extension ($60-65M/5 yrs?) would be very reasonably priced.
And for what?
Some prospect who odds are will never be as good?
NO THANKS
NO SELL on Donny, EXTENSION!
More like $60-65M/5 yrs.
But you have a point, one I've been making too, that JJW is targeted for 2nd base making Donny an OF'er.
If Noot is dealt (highly likely) and Walker fails (highly possible), even w/Hererra targeted for a position change to LF they'd still need Donny in RF unless you want Burleson out there (yikes).
But I wouldn't go any higher than $60-65M/5 yrs.
If he wants more, then deal him this offseason.
Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?

How did Houston make out in the deal? (Answer: dam good)
I know you’re used to the Mo trade returns of Rom, Roby, Saggese, and waiting 5 years for Libby.
But when you trade a current all star, the chances of getting a great cost controlled player(s) who can make an immediate impact is high.
Lastly, Donovan’s contract is up in 2027—-the same year he turns 30. Mo/Bloom would be dumb to not listen to offers…

At $2.85M (2025 salary) I highly doubt he'd get a $20M AAV extension offer.Youboughtit wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025 12:01 pmThat was offered prior to this season and rejected by Donovan. Now he’s an all star. $60-65M/5 yrs is more than fair.
Reportedly he turned down 6 years, $49 million last season.

Re: Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?
Donovan is a really nice player. Not short selling his skills. But... well there is always a but.
STL will not be relevant again until 2027 earliest IMO. The last year of control for Brendan. I do not see him taking an extension offer in the 5/$65 range. More like 5/$100 IMO. And he isn't worth that unless he is an every day 2B.
STL is loaded on the infield and JJ is likely to emerge next year so Donovan would have to move to LF where he is not a $20 mil per value. Plus his trade value might never be higher.
I would be actively shopping him to any playoff caliber team needing a 2B or even 3B. Getting 2-3 prospects probably results in at least one solid player and maybe one star player. I agree it is a (bleep) shoot. But I do not think STL succeeds in an extension nor resigning him after 2027 unless he fades which would also suck. And he will not be part of the next STL team that is relevant to winning a WS.
If STL wants to do the smart thing, painful as it might be, find a deal now. Cash in.

It was a recent discussion with Ken Rosenthal on 101.1. They asked what he thought the Cardinals would do with Donovan Trade or extend and he said they would like to extend but offered 5/60 before ST and Donovan rejected wanting more term and $ because this will be his only big contract. Said he will be looking for $20m AAV after the season he is having. He’s Whit Merrifield without the speed. $20 million AAV? LOL I’m fine with trading him. He’s not a franchise player. He’s essentially what David Freese was, a nice player, but if he’s your best, you’re in very deep do-do

If you don't think you're going to sign him to an extension that makes sense for the team. He's a free agent in 2028, so they've got two years to turn this team around and be competitive. If they think they can do it and two years and Donovan will play an important role in it, then maybe you might be more motivated to sign him. If not, then I'd definitely trade him.

Yes before free agency. Once he is being PAID he isn't producing enough in any area to make him a core piece. But he will get core money.
Re: Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?
No way. Foundational guys are like Pujols, Edmonds, Waino, both Carpenters, etc. He's a very good role player. Players need to be great to be foundational pieces. Not enough SLG or speed for that. I think of him like I used to think about Zobrist with the Cubs.

Re: Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?
Not intended to mean he is a superstar but that at his position he is a plus and he isn't a free agent until 2028. I'd put him at top 3 or 4 2B in MLB. Why would you trade him?
Lowe and Hoerner are making $11 million a year. You think Donovan will get more or is that too much?
