You build around, not through him.
Looking forward to seeing he and JJ on the infield together.![]()
But Donny is an all-star, gold glove winner and team leader, that's a piece you can build around (not THE PIECE by "a" piece).
Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?

Isn't that like 2 years away? As I stated, I would keep him unless it was an offer that I couldn't refuse. Nobody on the team is untouchable but why trade everyone you have away for more prospects. I'm all about the future of this organization but the "Present" is important as well..45s wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 11:47 amWith that in mind, how will they be able to field a mlb team when he walks in free agency?slimjay63801 wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 11:45 amThis.. Yes, but the Stro's seem better at making deals than this current organization. I just don't want Mo touching anything else.. Giving up Donnie for a "Bust" would be awful... Just leave him be for now..ecleme22 wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 12:00 pmKyle Tucker was the best the Astros had. As of now, Astros did great in that tradeslimjay63801 wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 11:45 amThis.. The odds of landing even ONE starting position player or ONE starting pitcher that makes your rotation are slim at best!
Sure it happens, but there's also an extremely high failure rate too (Re: Mo's "haul" from his big 2023 sell-off of Jack Flaherty, Jordan Montgomery, Jordan Hicks, Paul DeJong, Genesis Cabrera, and Chris Stratton = NOTHING of value).
No way I deal away Donny who even after an extension ($60-65M/5 yrs?) would be very reasonably priced.

Re: Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?
I haven't read much of this thread so maybe I'm parroting others.
I am ALL for dealing anyone on this team for the right return. It is my opinion they should be all in on 2027 as the take off point from a rebuild and that is the last year of control for Donovan. He is flying high and NOW is a perfect time to cash in. I believe this is his ceiling.
I don't see much on the Stros minor league system worth getting excited over but if they can get NYY to offer up Lombard, Jones, and a few others I say do it.
THIS is how to convert from a mid market mediocre team to a contender in a few years.
Go ahead and deal Gray and Helsley too if a buyer offers real value.
If STL adds 5-8 players in their own top 20 they will be poised to be a force in 2027 and beyond. IMO.

but can this organization pull off the smart deals......?
I doubt it
Re: Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?
If Bloom has any vision in him, unlike Mo, he will certainly entertain offers on Donovan. He's not a player you build around. How about selling high for once? If the return is right, you trade him for areas of real need like corner OF or starting rotation. The Cardinals have a system overloaded with second basemen. And JJ will be here sooner rather than later.
I view Winn and Herrera as the only players off the market. Winn for his spectacular defense and potential at the plate and Herrera because he will not bring much back because as of now, he's a DH only. So you can't trade low on him.

Re: Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?
Donovan- plus talent. Good bat and solid defender with position flexibility. And is cost controlled for two more seasons.
But... obviously if a “can’t refuse” deal pops up you move him.

Re: Do you forsee Bloom trading Donovan over the winter ?
Just a side bar to this.
With the Cardinals going public about its payroll and perceived (at least) change in philosophy how does that look to guys like Donovan and other young Cardinal players who may be up and comers but realize the big money is going to be elsewhere?
Thus buying out arbitration years, etc. may be something these players would rather not do and take their chances down the road in the FA market.
If Bloom or whoever is making the decisions sees that and it becomes a trend then moving guys like Donovan and perhaps later on Winn and others while they are still under "control" might be what the organization does.
I'm hoping it doesn't come to that but with the financials being what they apparently are I believe it could be something to look for.

Expected to be $20m per. That’s too much when Wetherholt is taking 2B. More like $60-65M/5 yrs.
But you have a point, one I've been making too, that JJW is targeted for 2nd base making Donny an OF'er.
If Noot is dealt (highly likely) and Walker fails (highly possible), even w/Hererra targeted for a position change to LF they'd still need Donny in RF unless you want Burleson out there (yikes).
But I wouldn't go any higher than $60-65M/5 yrs.
If he wants more, then deal him this offseason.
