Didn't affect Mike Hampton.
Re: Anyone have a height concern when it comes to Liam Doyle?
No.
Question.
Who is STL's best starter currently?

Sandy Koufax - LH pitcher - 6'2" tall - for 5 consecutive years the most dominant hurler in MLB history: 111-34 1.95 ERA 100 CG 33 shutouts 1444 strikeouts
Re: Anyone have a height concern when it comes to Liam Doyle?
Before the draft (in the pre-draft thread) I wanted STL to take Doyle or Arnold at 5 - whichever was available.
I thought one of them would be gone, leaving STL the other.
So yes, I think the Cardinals got the pick right.
As for the Angels...interesting strategy.
They will save money signing Bremner and Shores by picking them in the first 2 rounds well above projected slot....and then they picked HS prospects in rounds 3, 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, and 19.
Money saved in the first 2 rounds may allow them to overpay some of the high school talent and convince them to sign.
I would not say the Angels screwed up because they executed a specific strategy - but they may be second guessed a couple of years from now concerning the players they had a chance to pick and didn't.

S. Gray
5'10"
G. Maddux/6'
P. Marinez/5'11"
If you can pitch, then height is meaningless.
At 6'2" Doyle is plenty tall enough w/a rocket arm, no issue whatsoever.

Did you like the pick?
When you knew the Cards got Doyle,
were you surprised?
I think most had him mocked at #2
to the Angels.
We need some high-end pitching
and I know this kid is supposed to be
just that.
Hopefully, because lord knows dEwitt
won't be buying in FA.

Bryan Woo 6 ft 2, drafted in the 6th. Ya never know

In regard to the Angels, that's a different approach and I neverMelville wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 08:50 amBefore the draft (in the pre-draft thread) I wanted STL to take Doyle or Arnold at 5 - whichever was available.

would have thought a team might do that!!
By the way, thanks for the input.
I genuinely enjoy your posts.
Seems like the Cards made the correct decision.
Most of the pundits liked the pick and everyone
here is happy.
We'll wait and see how it ultimately turns out,
but can't fault the front office for their choice.

What this team has lacked for some time, sans the addition of S. Gray, is swing & miss STRIKEOUT starters!
After doing my homework on this kid he appears to be the gift C. Bloom was hoping for (I'd bet he had a lot of input w/R. Flores & Mo making this selection).
And you're right, the Halos did us a HUGE favor passing on him, they're getting slammed on many sites w/a "B" grade while the Cards are getting all "A's".
Spot on about BDWJr, he's not swimming in that end of the pool unless he gets a deal like he did w/Gray ($10M first season and only a three year deal).
Here's what's really exciting.
Unless Doyle is so good this spring and forces his way into the OD starting rotation he gets to develop under Bloom's tremendous pitcher player development system that's now fully in place (Re: Tampa system that still uses the program he created)!
Great pick, just stay healthy.

That's what I want to hear.
That kid also brings a certain excitement
to the game, if you saw some of his highlights.
Not sure that will translate to MLB, but I love
the enthusiasm.
If he acts like that, we may need all members of
the 40 man to take MMA lessons.

Yeah, I hope Bloom is able to get the very best
from all our prospects.
We've been hurting for a long time on high end talent.
