It's just obvious that there are more voices and smarter voices in the room now. If the Cardinals could start stacking up good decisions from the front office- have a good draft, have a good deadline, have a good offseason, have a good international signing period- the fans confidence would be restored sooner than later. It was a good draft and portends of better things to come.craviduce wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 18:00 pmthose guys have a lot of good balance in their deliveries....really consistent pitch to pitch. we have a chance to get 4-6 pitchers in the majors with this draft....legit shot.

Pointed this out in another thread. This is the Seattle theory in drafting pitchers. We see Bloom’s hires influence.craviduce wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 18:00 pmthose guys have a lot of good balance in their deliveries....really consistent pitch to pitch. Just playing catch up here. Been moving places all day, and it was a slog.
I like the Jalin Flores pick. Saw him play against Mizzou. Take it for what it's worth, but he looked like a ballplayer. I could see him being the Brendan Donovan/Tommy Edman/token Cardinals Scrappy Utility Guy. Seemed very professional.

And watch them make the 17 year old relevant. C'mon kid, go to college. BAs report
Full name
Shane Brinham
Born
08/13/2007 in
Profile
Ht.: 6'1" / Wt.: 175 / Bats: R / Throws: L
Top Rankings
Draft Prospects
Ranked #480 prospect in 2025 draft
School: Hansworth SS, North Vancouver, B.C. Drafted/Committed: Michigan
Age At Draft: 17.9
Brinham is a double-projection lefthander with a 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame who made strides with both his strikes and fastball velocity in 2025. After pitching in the upper 80s and touching 91 mph in 2024 with scattered strikes, Brinham has pushed his fastball into the 88-90 mph range and touched 93 in 2025 with more precision. His secondaries are fringy now and require plenty of projection, but he has shown some flashes of a quality breaking ball in the mid 70s and a changeup in the low 80s. Brinham moves well on the mound with a compact arm action and three-quarter slot. He could make some big strides by adding a bit more strength in the future. The Canadian native is committed to Michigan and will still be 17 on draft day.

try this on for size:
we're only two weeks away from the trade deadline.

Nah you and the other guys are. 6 to 8 months of scouting and discussion. I just cheated. BA gets me every year at this time.

Name the last high school pitcher who reached MLB within 2 years - and became a long term, highly effective, starter.ClassicO wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 17:05 pmHernandez and Doyle are 2 years apart at 19 and 21, both June birthdays. I thought you were referring to the overall strategy.
Doyle was unquestionably a very good pick.
Given the general condition of pitching depth (more correctly, the last thereof) in the organization, and considering all the starting pitchers they will lose in the next 27 months, it would have been incredibly stupid to not pick a top college arm and instead draft a far bigger question mark who would not be ready to contribute for 5 years or so.
Granted, 3 years of college is a big boost for LD, but given Hernandez's age and ability, he'd likely be in the bigs in 2 years or so, not 5.
That would be a foolish timeline.
You are fully aware of that, so it is a little surprising to see you pretend otherwise.
There is a valid conversation to be had about the 2 picks - but claiming both are likely to be in MLB in 2 years is ridiculous.

All right, my friends, answer this question: how many major league players have made the jump from high school or college directly to the majors? Second question: how many of them were pitchers?
Go ahead-I’m listening.
G. Crochett
R. Johnson (Angels , Not the Big Unit)
Also
M. Leake
J. Abbott
D. Dreifort
M. Morgan
T. Conroy
I don't think S. Koufax played minor league ball, neither did D. Winfield, B. Horner, P. Incavelia or J. Olerud.
And who can forget D. Clyde!
OK-interesting.
Just for fun, I pulled 4 of those names at random and looked at lifetime stats.
Ready??
Johnson: 2025 rookie stats: 1-1 7.36 ERA
Dreifort: 48-60 4.36 ERA (10 seasons)
Conroy: 18-32 -2.6 WAR
Morgan: 141-186 4.32 ERA
Any more questions on the wisdom of rookie pitchers skipping A/AA/AAA?

I didn’t say HS players were a good risk. I challenged your stupid comparison with Doyle when they are 2 years apart.Melville wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 18:46 pmName the last high school pitcher who reached MLB within 2 years - and became a long term, highly effective, starter.ClassicO wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 17:05 pmHernandez and Doyle are 2 years apart at 19 and 21, both June birthdays. Not sure if it was mentioned (there are 47 some pagers already, didn't have time to look through each) but we drafted all college players except for the 1 high school kid from Tennessee. I find that kind of strange that in 20 rounds we only took 1 high school kid. Was that on purpose or did it just work out that way. i can't remember us taking so few high school kids ever.

A lot of big arms.

I'm not sure if it was on purpose, it just worked out that way. It helped having the Comp pick, that increased our funds allowed.brock118 wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 20:11 pm Not sure if it was mentioned (there are 47 some pagers already, didn't have time to look through each) but we drafted all college players except for the 1 high school kid from Tennessee. As for ever....last year, 1 HS pick at the end of the draft...he didn't sign. Same in 2023, last round, didn't sign. 2022, last round, didn't sign.
Since the draft shrunk to 20 rounds after CoVid, we have drafted, including this year, 7 HS kids....3 in 2021, and as said above, 1 every year after that.
On a side note ~ I wanted several HS players this year. I was hoping for 5-7 drafted, and realistically expecting only 4 to sign. We had the 8th most Bonus Pool this year. So we had money to spend. It didn't work out that way

Oh, by the way, here are some pitchers who were drafted out of HS and had some success: Kershaw, Gooden, Greinke, Bumgarner, Chris Carpenter, Roy Halladay, CC Sabathia, Josh Beckett, Cole Hamels, Matt Cain, Adam Wainwright, Kerry Wood, Catfish Hunter, J.R. Richard, Alex Fernandez, Steve Avery, Frank Tanana, Rick Rhoden, Rick Sutcliffe, Scott McGregor, Jon Matlack, Gary Nolan, Joe Coleman, Don Gullet, Bruce Hurst, Mike Morgan - and more.ClassicO wrote: ↑14 Jul 2025 20:10 pmI didn’t say HS players were a good risk.
