I am not really sure Dougy made a "bad decision", as history eventually proved out!a smell of green grass wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 15:58 pm This case reminds me a bit of the Doug Gilmour in the late 80s.
Gilmour had to leave the Blues to start over based on his personal conduct. Gilmour turned out alright after his bad decision.

Re: Logan Mailloux is coming!!
Good GM’s know how to build teams. “Not so good” GM’s collect players and shiny toys.
Dubas had all the talent in the world, but never built a TEAM in Toronto that could succeed in the playoffs. He absolutely refused to trade one of his shiny toys to address their obvious needs and they have never succeeded in the playoffs. We’ll see if he’s any better in Pittsburgh.
Yzerman, widely regarded as a good GM, had the benefit of a lot of very high draft picks and collected a lot of talent in Tampa, but he never built a team that could win in the playoffs. Only after he left did Tampa make those moves and win. Yzerman has now been in Detroit for several years, has had a bunch of high draft picks, has collected a ton of talent, but still can’t get over the hump. I know some of you will take issue that I don’t revere “Stevie”, but he has not succeeded.
Army knows the Blues will never succeed in the playoffs if he doesn’t fix certain holes. Right D is the most glaring hole we have. Hopefully Jiricek stays healthy and becomes a force, and hopefully Mailloux achieves his potential. If so, we will have a very strong defense on both sides.
I hate trading Bolduc….as in really hate it. But we have one area of significant depth and that is on the wing. We have two or three more guys that could make the jump to the NHL a year from now, and Carbonneau might only be two years away. So I hate trading Bolduc, but I get why it happened. If Mailloux becomes a solid top 4 defenseman, then the Blues will be in very good shape. Did Army take a risk? Sure, but where else is a RHD going to come from?

I think in your prior post calling it some kind of possible "carte blanche " move was a bit strange.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 16:49 pmIt's not that I don't believe in him. I am not qualified to say much about him because I've never seen him play. My issue here is solely based on the trade itself. Trading a player in Bolduc that I viewed as very promising and who showed a lot of valuable tools over an extended NHL period for a guy that is still basically unproven is not ideal to me. The Blues were not backed into a corner here. If it was Stenberg, I honestly wouldn't have batted an eye (though some seem to think otherwise as far as his value).Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 16:43 pmThey have a high paid staff that discusses these things in detail. Because he's a 22 year old dman with limited NHL experience?MiamiLaw wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 16:38 pmWhy? Just because the Blues are weak at RHD, the team gets carte blanche to make whatever trade they want and is beyond analysis as to value? I think this is just gatekeeping to prevent dissent.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 16:34 pm
We can't do the "we need to trade for a right handed Dman" then when Army does immediately go "not like that"
It's a gamble. The Blues took on more risk. I don't see how you deny either of those two things.
I hope LM kills it of course. I am judging this only in the trade context.
I agree with you on Zac and where he surely looks to be going but I won't drag DA and staff down suggesting they needed to just try something.
I'm pretty numb on this thing but I do take solace that this trade was anything but a carte blanche move for DA.
I take his evaluations very seriously.

Go to the MTL boards and see if you see that.
Big fan of Bolduc but I understand the deal. That’s really all I can say for certain today.

Re: Logan Mailloux is coming!!
St Louis fans, at teh time, were thrilled with the ROR trade too. Me included.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 17:10 pm Jack - Habs fans, that have seen LM play actual NHL minutes and know more about him than 99% of the people on this board are almost universally thrilled by this trade.
Do the good folks of MTL not know about RHD scarcity? No. They’re thrilled because they view Bolduc as the more valuable player. Regardless of need, if they lost someone they all thought was going to be a great player, they would not be dancing.
This could well be a great hockey trade.
And "fans" over DA and staff?
OK.

Re: Logan Mailloux is coming!!
There were no RHDs younger than Mailloux (and only 2 LHDs) that played 30 games in the NHL last year, in case folks are wondering how his development paces with his peers. Defensemen that young are just not common these days.

This trade is getting HAMMERED in the hockey online forums as a big win for the Habs and loss for the Blues.
But sure, it would have been better to grab him.

Re: Logan Mailloux is coming!!
Good discussion guys.
A couple of thoughts. Bolduc was slotted for the 3rd line RW. Kyrou and Snuggerud are ahead of him. The room on wingers is packed (or getting packed).
Why is the K'Andre Miller deal being discussed. He's at a different stage of his career. And I wouldn't trust anything the Rangers do.
This was a painful trade but the Blues are now more balanced. The prospects are about ready to compete for the openings. I also think Army isn't quite done yet either.

This IS HIS LIFE by the way. He loves to see a split board more than anything.
It's like Christmas morning for him when his little brother didn't get the toy he wanted.
Re: Logan Mailloux is coming!!
I sure wish someone would have suggested this trade on here yesterday so we could see the non homer opinions of it.

Yeah, that’s a good point dhsux. Army is confident and he trusts his scouts. That’s a good thing. Based on how they have drafted in recent years (this is basically the same thing), I feel very good that Mailloux will work out very well.
