By all accounts, the Blues talked to the Canadiens quite a bit over the last few days. I'm sure they did some background on the kid and how he's moved past his issues. I hate that there's baggage but I would guess the team is comfortable that he has learned and grown from it.

Will be interesting to see if Army addresses it when they hold the press conference.

I don't like the present imbalance of this trade regarding the level of certainty between the players.

I consider Zach as highly certain to have a robust career and granted I know little of Mailloux but that's the point.

If Mailloux is a top 4 guy I like this trade even though I think so highly of Bolduc.

I'm just sitting here in neutral right now and I don't particularly like neutral.

Really hope you're right Doug.

He played 7 games as a rookie last year and was a -5. Said to make a lot of defensive mistakes, brain farts and dumb penalties. There’s absolutely a reality in which he’s a solid 2nd pairing guy in 2-3 years but he’s far from a guarantee IMO. So yeah, far from a guarantee to make the opening roster this season.

Its likely they season Mailloux in Springfield because the Blues dont necessarily need him and no need to push him if he isnt ready now. With the Blues track record on prospects you have to know theyve done their home work

Im pretty sure Montreal fans would be hyping the return and claiming victory even if we traded Mailloux for Ron Caron’s bifocals and the burner the meat’s on.

Only played 7 games for the Canadiens this season and was caved in defensively. He’s far from a sure bet IMO. I just absolutely hate it. I know he’s a RD and that’s a more valuable position than a winger but that doesn’t make up for the gap in value IMO. They were taken in the same draft - Bolduc was taken 14 spots higher and he’s shown he should’ve gone higher to date.

And then add in the off ice baggage/PR issues they’ll now have to deal with and…yuck. I just absolutely hate it on first reaction.
If he needs to spend half of the season in Springfield that puts him on the Broberg path age-wise. Lots and lots of really good defensemen didn't blossom in the NHL at his age.

On paper, this looks like a trade from strength in numbers that potentially fills a huge hole with an emerging young cost-controlled player. For roughly similar value. A trade with an eye for the future.
I get this but what if he needs more time than half a season? What if the brain farts just never go away? Then what? He’s maybe a flawed 3rd pairing RD for some years? I just value Bolduc much much higher as of now.

Not really. We have 2 RHD that we can easily run out there for the entire year.

Mailloux can come in, play 3rd RHD, learn the game and get better as the season progresses.

We can afford for him to make mistakes in the 12-14 minutes a game he'll get.

Montreal needs goals and needs them this year. They weren't going to get that with someone who is a year away from the NHL.
Idk. If all of this is the case, I would’ve rather kept Bolduc than trade for MTL’s undesirable projects. Bolduc is an established NHLer at this point. The Blues just developed him for another team and took on their developing guy.

I just don’t see Mailloux as the guy to trade a Bolduc for

What if Bolduc's 2nd half of last season is an aberration. If we are basing everything on playoff performance we'd be driving Bolduc to the airport. Remember its a numbers game, cant keep them all. I am glad it wasnt Neighbours, Snuggerud or even Stenberg

Because Bolduc is an established NHLer. LM is not and may not even be this year. Pretty simple

How many games have you seen LM play Harry? My guess is zero. Same as almost all of us

Kind of seems like something Buffalo would do.

Who knows what Mailloux might turn into but IMO he doesn't warrant that kind of return right now and I'd be surprised if that wasn't the best offer by a huge margin.

I think Stenberg is going to be a very good NHLer he has a big tool box my fear was that Stenberg would be dealt. I like Bolduc he had a really good run under Monte. We have to be honest aside from the last half of last year Bolduc has done very little in the NHL and was bad in the playoffs. Still i think Bolduc is a lock for 20-25 goals next year. I also believe Stenberg will produce this too when his time comes.

Its still a stretch to claim Bolduc is "established" he had 1/2 of a season

My last comment in this thread is…everyone who is cautiously against this trade or vehemently against it, arent wrong to feel that way, cause we just dont know yet how itll play out longterm. Im optimistic that Mailloux will be a big bruising top 4 Dman, but I could also be totally wrong. Im goin to enjoy watchin him *hopefully* progress in the years to come tho.
