Re: Marchand staying in FLA
How exactly are they affording this?
Re: Marchand staying in FLA
It was a 17 year deal, with the majority being paid out in 10. That's what led to the year limit on contracts and the recapture penalty if a player retires before it ends.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 16:24 pmDidn't the Devils get hammered on the Kovy deal for this?britishblue wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 16:23 pm Im sorry a 6 year at 37?!
Id be shocked if he plays more than 2 seasons before he is on LTIR.

Because Ryan Suter was the oldest skater in the NHL this year at 39-40 years old. Marchand is supposed to play until he’s 43? Please. This is cap circumvention.zamadoo wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 16:57 pmWhat's the problem? Re: Marchand staying in FLA
They now have ZERO cap space with Marchand signing and they only have 12 fowards signed & 6 defenseman & only 1 goalie

Cap circumvention? That’s called keeping the most important players for another cup run. That’s how you run a team.bluetunehead wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 17:36 pmBecause Ryan Suter was the oldest skater in the NHL this year at 39-40 years old. Marchand is supposed to play until he’s 43? They might win 3 more cups…nobody will even care when they have to dismantle it at that point. They might also have a center or two that’s available now for a pretty low price. Know any teams looking for one?

It’s cap circumvention when you sign a player below market value to play 3 years longer than any current NHLer.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 17:41 pmCap circumvention? Re: Marchand staying in FLA
This is definitely a contract that even Florida doubts will be met to completion.
Is this the last year deals can be signed under current rules? Is that why Bennet, Ekblad also signed nice long 8 year deals? Feels like Florida will have a lengthy advantage over other teams not in position to do this (either by affordability or players at the right age with expiring contracts).

He can be a leader and his hockey IQ is quite high. He was born for playoff hockey.

This is the last offseason players can sign 8 year deals, yeah. Though I don’t think that’s particularly weird. Bennett and Ekblad are both prime aged players. Their deals will *expire* at Marchand’s current age.mph6689new wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 17:49 pm This is definitely a contract that even Florida doubts will be met to completion.

They wouldn’t trade lundell, would they?Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 17:45 pm They might win 3 more cups…nobody will even care when they have to dismantle it at that point. They might also have a center or two that’s available now for a pretty low price. Know any teams looking for one?

Nobody forced Marchand to sign the contract. He signed where he wanted to play because he knows he can win there.bluetunehead wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 17:48 pmIt’s cap circumvention when you sign a player below market value to play 3 years longer than any current NHLer.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 17:41 pmCap circumvention? Re: Marchand staying in FLA
Marchand gets paid the same either way. Why would he have to be forced? The point is that Florida gets around the cap by paying him less now than other teams would have, knowing there is little chance he’ll actually play the full length and they can LTIR him at the end.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 17:59 pmNobody forced Marchand to sign the contract. What if Marchand signed 6 years with a different team as a UFA?bluetunehead wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 18:04 pmMarchand gets paid the same either way. Why would he have to be forced?
