Not much difference in drafting #1 or #5 in the upcoming MLB draft

Except saving some money. The Cardinals lucked out getting the #5 pick. They are also fortunate that there doesn't seem to be four players that will be a lot better than whomever is available for them at #5.

Let's say Anderson, Holliday, Arnold and either Doyle or Arquette go before the Cardinals pick. That leaves, possibly, the best high school pitching prospect, Hernandez. And, possibly, the top high school hitting prospect, Willits.

Since 2009, the Cardinals have had 26 picks in the first, Competitive Balance A, or Supplemental first rounds and only used four of those picks on HS pitchers. They took Tyrell Jenkins (2010), Rob Kamisnky (2013), Jack Flaherty (2014), and Jake Woodford (2015). Since Randy Flores was hired, the Cardinals have had 11 picks in that same rounds and they've taken 4 high school players and none were pitchers. The Cardinals have a type, and Seth Hernandez doesn't appear to be it.

The Cardinals probably won't take Hernandez if he's available. But maybe they should. Lots of upside. Ace-type upside. Consider a future rotation of McGreevy, Mathews, Roby, Hence and Hernandez. I'm convinced you win big with fabulous pitching.

I am getting more interested in Willits as being the Cardinals pick at #5. If he hadn't reclassified he might have been the #1 pick in the 2026 draft. Willits could end up being a switch hitting center fielder.

Last night I tried to find a church or VFW that had a fish fry on Friday. It looks like Covid got rid of fish fries except during Lent. I miss the 2 fish fries in Collinville with one being around over 70 years now.

The one thing that potentially gives hope is that the Cardinals haven't really gotten a chance to draft someone of Hernandez's upside/floor combination in several years. I'll never shut the door, but it's unlikely he's the pick. I like pitching, but that's not the Cardinals' type to spend big on HS pitchers.
