At this point in his career he’s certainly not worth the bonuses we paid out to him for another year, it worked great this past year.

I wonder if he’d be open to being a 7 dman that plays around 40 games (assuming no major or non stop injuries to the d), paid less, but can be in a player/coach type role. That way he might actually have something in the tank left for the playoffs if needed.

Hey, I saw Chelios down here in Atlanta with the Thrashers at age 48. He was no longer a viable NHL player, quickly retired after seven games.

Best wishes to Suter, he wore his BlueNote proudly!

How to know you are old:

Discussing Chris Chelios, who I remember both when he came into the league and when he retired at age 48, and THAT was 16 years ago!

Gotta be real, I had to wiki Chelios. I had no idea he went to the minors and Atlanta after the Wings.

The guy just didn’t want to stop playing hockey. Have to give him credit. There are probably other players who could stick it out in lower leagues if they cared enough to try.

It was a very good signing last year. He did well for us, not only as a player but as a mentor. And he earned his bonuses.
Recall there were a lot of unfortunate things said about him on this forum, re he'll be a room cancer...not true, not fair, based upon a former ax-to-grind teammate, whom I also like as a player by the way.
Suter also made it pretty clear that he values these coming few years to spend more time with his kids, and he values his wife's input in that regard. Could he be a good coach? Yes likely. But I think he takes a few years away from the full-time involvement, and may choose to be an amateur scout in the area which he lives for an NHL team.
I'm glad he was here. I enjoyed getting to see more of him and to see more of his true character.

am I the only one that'd rather see Suter as our 7th than Kessel?

I'm not against Kessel, but I would like to have Suter around him. I understand where the Blues are coming from. And who knows ... maybe they've had some talks with Suter's team and had an advance look at the number they were going to ask for.

I'm sure they left the door open for him. He was a warrior for us.

Army could totally still find a veteran RHD on a cheap deal. But i would not be at all opposed to seeing if Kessel can handle 3rd RHD esp in Oct-Nov. If he cant do it they can find a more experienced option

I wasn’t impressed at all with what we had in Tucker, but then he really made some strides last year.
Same is true for Kessel now, let’s hope there’s a similar ending there as well
