I'm doing fine in every way, but enough about me. No one cares to hear about me, and I hate boring people.
TT is not a top 5 pick, so according to your prior, ahem, "logic" he doesnt matter anyway, like Steve Yzerman or Colton Parayko, and you must love Nail.....a smell of green grass wrote: ↑22 Jun 2025 22:04 pmI'm doing fine in every way, but enough about me. This post is asking why we have no Tage Thompson. We gave away the stars of the 2019 cup, and we have nothing to show for it.
Maybe ask Army where he lives.
a smell of green grass wrote: ↑22 Jun 2025 16:06 pmSo let's replay how good our transactions were.bluetunehead wrote: ↑22 Jun 2025 13:07 pm I know I’m wasting my time but it’s also extremely rare to see a trade that works out the way the ROR trade did, where each team ends up with a major win of some kind. We got the Cup. They got a star. The only other one that comes to mind is Nieuwendyk for Iginla. Dallas got their Cup and Calgary got a future HOFer.
Vegas got Pietrangelo and Barbashev, and they won a Stanley Cup.
The Blues got nothing for either player.
Toronto got ROR and they won their first playoff round in 19 years.
The Blues got some prospects that haven't made it to the NHL yet, much less make any sort of impact.
Tage Thompson is a prospect that paid off. Buffalo has 1 very beautiful bird in hand in exchange for ROR. St louis has 6 prospects in the bush for all of the stars of their 2019 Cup.
Vegas has never drafted in the top-5. Their first draft in 2017 they took Cody Glass #6 and Suzuki #13. Glass is not very good at all and has bounced around after being traded for former #2OA Nolan Patrick, who is now retired at only 26 years old. Suzuki is very good and plays for Montreal (traded for 30 y/o Max Pacioretty who did not win a Cup with Vegas). After losing in the semi-finals, Vegas drafted Zach Dean #30 OA, who was later traded for Barbashev (a pending UFA who was a #33 OA pick and was a 4th liner that didn't eclipse 30 points in a season until he was 26).zamadoo wrote: ↑22 Jun 2025 18:23 pm Tage Thompson was 24 when he finally broke out with a good season. He wins only 42% of draws, was a wing for the Blues, and really slots better at wing than center. Prior to his age 24 season, fans in STL had almost forgotten his name and considered the trade very lopsided, with only a bit of a chance of Tage actually evening it out for Buffalo.

Zach Dean is 22 and good at faceoffs - a pure center
Dalibor Dvorsky is 20 (as of a week ago) and good at faceoffs - a pure center
Robert Thomas was 19 at the time of the Tage Thompson trade, and he is a top center in the league
Edit: Also worth noting that Petro and Schwartz left as UFAs. Vince Dunn was lost in the expansion. We cashed in on ROR, Tarasenko, and Barbs to come out with a pretty good haul: Dvorsky (our pick), Lindstein, Stenberg, and Dean (plus others). ROR and Tarasenko have been mediocre to bad since their last season(s) here and after we traded them.
Completely different situations. O’Reilly was not a pending UFA at the trade deadline when we traded for him. When we trade him and the others he was going to be a pending UFA.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑22 Jun 2025 10:11 am The Blues gave up prospect Tage Thompson to get ROR for their Stanley Cup run.

Where is our young "Tage Thompson" in return for all of those players that we gave up?
Can somebody ask Army?
Some teams deal their star players while they still have trade value. The Blues keep their players until their trade value diminishes. We gave up our players and got nothing in return — thus far —- And that is the bottom line.Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 10:26 amCompletely different situations. You are not going to get a top young player for a rental unless it’s an elite game changer.
We will need to see what the draft pics we received in those trades turn into. I have no regrets on the Thompson trade. I would do it 100 out of a 100 times.
It's not the bottom line. It's short-sighted. The Blues had their core and went as far as they could. The 22/23 season was the end, so Army traded key pieces of the core to start the re-tool or re-build or whatever you call it. That process takes more than 2 years to be competitive and it's only been two years.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 10:57 amSome teams deal their star players while they still have trade value. Buffalo parlayed one player with no cup credentials into TT.chuckt wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 11:23 am I can't believe this thread has gone on for several pages. The premise is an intellectually bankrupt perspective.
The Blues gave up Tage Thompson to get ROR in his prime, signed to a contract with multiple years of control. On top of this, no one expected Tage to be this good, so Buffalo benefitted from some luck. Tage also took several years to pop off.
The Blues traded off older players who were past their prime and on expiring contracts. Neither were Conn Smythe winners for their team.
I’ll ask again, what has Buffalo done with this star player? When was the last time they made the playoffs?a smell of green grass wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 11:38 amBuffalo parlayed one player with no cup credentials into TT.chuckt wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 11:23 am I can't believe this thread has gone on for several pages. Army parlayed the stars from our cup win into NOTHING— thus far.
Ill ignore one more time. What Buffalo accomplished with TT is 100% irrelevant to this discussion. Buffalo got a good young player in exchange for ROR. The Blues have got no NHL quality thus far. Bottom line.netboy65 wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 11:48 amI’ll ask again, what has Buffalo done with this star player? First it was we traded our stars, now it’s we hung onto them too long.
There’s heat warnings out today, I’d refrain from moving the goalposts any more if I were you (and I’m glad I’m not)
Our stars were old and on the downslope. They weren't worth the same as ROR was when we traded for him. This isn't rocket science.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 11:38 amBuffalo parlayed one player with no cup credentials into TT.chuckt wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 11:23 am I can't believe this thread has gone on for several pages. Tage Thompson was traded on July 1st, 2018. It took year #4 before he made any sort of impact. Blues are approaching year #3.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑23 Jun 2025 12:10 pmIll ignore one more time. What Buffalo accomplished with TT is 100% irrelevant to this discussion.
