I know this guy isn’t very well liked here, but Eckland on hockeybuzz has already stated the plan is to trade McDavid. He seems to think LA is the destination.
gretzky trade part deux.. makes sense since Drai is already signed

still.. hard to part ways with that kind of talent

For sure it is. But they still won in 1989. And if they can keep the other top talent and put additional on the table and some more in the pantry, they can still be a highly competitive team. The question is: Does the GM have what it takes?

$4m for a guy who logged less than 12mins TOI/g in the Stanley Cup Final.

This contract will be a problem when they try to fit Bouchard's $8M, $9M, $10M, $11M contract into the fold in the next 12 days.

They had $11.9M in cap space coming into the off-season, with four roster spots, including Bouchard, open. They now have $8M in cap space to sign Bouchard and two other forwards . . . not to mention trying to upgrade their goalie situation. This pretty much guarantees they are going to have to move some contracts, but most of them have a modified NTC (Kane and Janmark), or NMC (Henrique and Arvidsson). Would be hilarious if they boxed themselves into a situation where they can't match an offer sheet for Bouchard because they had to lock up Frederic.
Arvidsson has a NMC?? LOL! Wow… Oilers gonna Oil.

Naaaa. If he goes to LA or NY the ratings will go through the roof. If he goes to Toronto, just Toronto ratings will.

Man, the Oilers do some weird things.
They need to fix their defense. Skinner isn't great, but at least start putting together a better blueline.

And how is the h3ll do you give NMC to Henrique and Arvidisson? At least their contracts end after 25/26.

I'm guessing part of it is that Edmonton isn't a desirable destination outside of getting to play with McDrai and chase a cup. As a veteran I'll sign there (and maybe even at a slight discount) to chase a ring/cup but I want guarantees that you aren't going to then flip me to some random team (i.e. the situation they are in right now), at least not without me having a say in the matter.

With only one year left on his current contract, now's the time to do it.

The Toronto Globe and Mail (I'm an online subscriber) carried an idiotic column yesterday comparing Gretzky's 4 Stanley Cups to McDavid's none at the same age. I guess that columnist has never heard of Paul Coffey*; Grant Fuhr*; Glenn Anderson*; Mark Messier*; Jari Kurri*; Kevin Lowe*; nor of Gretzky's bodyguards Dave Semenko, Kevin McClelland, and Marty McSorley.

Yeah the fact that the Oilers quickly won another Cup after trading Gretzky is all you need to know. The Oilers without McDavid would be completely toast. Drai is all-world, Hyman is good, RNH is respectable. The rest of their forwards are spare parts. And the less said about the defense and goaltending the better. No sign of a Fuhr, Moog, or Ranford to carry the load.
