they offered him more years to bring cap hit down, so they can sign bouchard. they know team will be rebuilding in the 5th,6th,7th years, if not in year 4,and 5.

I really don't understand what Edmonton's leadership is thinking in this. Am I wrong in that this guy is at best a third liner and probably spends time between that line and a fourth line? It seems to me that Trent is a guy you allow to test the market to see what he is worth. This allows you to free up cap for the guy you really need to sign in Bouchard. If Trent can't find a suitor, and you can't find anyone better after resigning your d-man, you offer Trent a 2 million deal with maybe a club option for a second year.

This contract will be a problem when they try to fit Bouchard's $8M, $9M, $10M, $11M contract into the fold in the next 12 days.

They had $11.9M in cap space coming into the off-season, with four roster spots, including Bouchard, open. They now have $8M in cap space to sign Bouchard and two other forwards . . . not to mention trying to upgrade their goalie situation. This pretty much guarantees they are going to have to move some contracts, but most of them have a modified NTC (Kane and Janmark), or NMC (Henrique and Arvidsson). Would be hilarious if they boxed themselves into a situation where they can't match an offer sheet for Bouchard because they had to lock up Frederic.

I like Freddy as much as the next guy but even a 3.75m hit for 2 or 3 years seems like a bit much for an above average bottom 6 winger.

I know this guy isn’t very well liked here, but Eckland on hockeybuzz has already stated the plan is to trade McDavid. He seems to think LA is the destination.
