Im not advocating maton for closer.
But Era for save situations is a misleading stat and i hate seeing people constantly misusing and misunderstanding save stats.
Any stat regarding save situations is not indicative for anything unless the player is a full time closer. Because you only get a save if you complete the 9th inning
But you still get blown saves for blowing leadsnin the 6th 7th and 8th innings, while not getting saves for completing them with the lead intact.
Meaning, when maton gets a hold, it doesnt affect his save percentage or sv situations stats.
But the one time maton blows a 6-8th inning stat- it is a blown save and thus the situation becomes counted as a save situation- even though he never had a chance to get a save. So it is automatically just counting his bad outings where he gave up runs and only rare occasions does he get actual 9th inning sv%s to lower that number.
If a player never pitches a 9th inning sv% to sub for a closer, then his sv% will like automatically be over 9 cuz it will only ever count situations where he gave up runs(or i guess gave up inherited runners to give up a lead)
But in any case. It is a useless stat not telling what people think it is do to nonclosers being credited with svs.
It is not how maton has pitched in actual 9th inning sv situations. Its how maton lutched in them- plus every bad outing hes had in 6th-8th inning with a lead plus non of the good ones.
Any player who is not a fulltime closer will automatically have terrible sv% stats and percentages by default because of how the stat works with blown saves in 6th-8th innings while not getting credit for successful 6th-8th innings because those are holds.
