Re: Maton for closer
He might have his moments but he is also very capable of coming out and blowing hitters away too. Maybe not the best closer in the game like some think but top ten easily. Still pretty darn valuable and we could do a lot worse. Maton would likely be overexposed full time in the role - career 4.11 ERA. RH just recently set the team record for saves and now washed up?
When you reach the top of the mountain there is nowhere to go but down. Most other team’s closers will never achieve what he already has in the entire careers.

Re: Maton for closer
Allowing a leadoff double and following it with a HBP to put the go-ahead run on is hardly "nails."
But I give him credit, in very Helseyesque fashion, he mopped up the mess he made and closed it out.

Re: Maton for closer
Maton is more of a setup guy
Doesn’t have closer stuff, he only throws 90mph but good in 7th or 8th inning
Breaking ball usually pretty good for swing and miss

Yes , he did . If the result is no runs allowed , makes no difference if you get them out 1, 2, 3 OR you load up the bases and get the 3rd out.blackinkbiz wrote: ↑25 May 2025 22:39 pmAllowing a leadoff double and following it with a HBP to put the go-ahead run on is hardly "nails."

Only difference is that in latter case, you give thousands of fans AT the game and those watching on TV heart palpitations, AFIB symptoms, high blood pressure, possible strokes , mild heart attacks but other than that no big deal !

100% agreeBaseball Savant wrote: ↑25 May 2025 22:41 pm Maton is more of a setup guy

Re: Maton for closer
And the contrast between the speed of Maton and Helsley could also be an advantage.
Re: Maton for closer
He’s now 7/20. Solid plan

Re: Maton for closer
I think that's his success rate. Either way, this post made me laugh. Moving Helsley out of the closer role is the last thing this org would do. Either way, happy mm day dog. You are one of the good guys. Humble dude. I like that. If you are humble, that means you can still learn stuff even if you are old. Plus your posts usually have some component to them that makes the reader think. Keep up the good work.
