He is the perfect player in a reset. And now giving above league level defensive performance.

He did have the longest home run last year I think. Just for conversation.

Two thought- he can hit but not consistent. And if he is good behind the plate, that in itself is worthy. This helps his pitchers tremendously.

I’d love a hitter too but on our infield we can surface some offense for the best defense.
Exactly.

A good ballclub should have the offense to offset a strong defensive catcher with not as good offense who the pitchers trust working with.

Offense from that position is a bonus.

Let me paint you a future WS picture- Pallante on the mound pitching to Paige’s. Now that is a vision, haha, sorry couldn’t resist the temptation.

Yes sir. He finishes the defensive polish of an infield. He is part of the up the middle defensive effort, even more valuable.

Correct.
Also consider this.
Pagnozzi: .253/.299/.359/.658
Pages: .228/.270//.368/.639
Pagnozzi played 12 years and caught 90+ games 4 times.
Pages may be capable of something similar.

Pages should at least make a solid backup.
Like others have said there seems to be quality depth in the system.
I wouldn’t sleep on Pozo and there is still Herrera.
Will be interesting to see it play out.

Pretty much this^. Yadi couldn't hit at first either, so maybe Pages can make himself into a serviceable hitter. We shall see. He will certainly hold the position until one of the kids in the minors can take it away from him.
Yadi was elite defensively. #4's defensive talent was generational. Pages, while good defensively, is nowhere near the class of Yadi. Yadi was so good that offense didn't matter much. Pages is not that. Apples and oranges IMO.

We should show more respect to just how good Yadi was.

Pozo’s a better hitter than Pages.

Pozo’s a better hitter than Pages.
But he hits in only four innings- catches nine. What he brings in his four innings does not counter his defensive performance. Too skewed.

Basil my friend, I was NOT saying Pages will become Yadi. Just pointing out that Yadi (and Ozzie for that matter) made themselves into decent hitters with a lot of work. Pages may or may not be capable of that.... Not saying Pages is Yadi defensively at all. Just that he may improve at the plate. Or not..... I don't think Pages is the be all end all catcher. I think he is a decent placeholder until one of the kids in the minors develops.

Let's not let the OP's "long-term solution!" question bury the fact that Pages has been an asset this year.

You know, the team pitching wasn't great before Herrera's injury. And has been really good since.

Long term backup? Maybe..
