Pedro Pages: Is he the long-term solution (Just named defensive player of the month)

Post by Bully4you »

I've noticed he's the best defensive option now.
Didn't realize he'd been this good.

Here's the data from SIS:

Pedro Pagés, Cardinals C

Pedro Pagés led all catchers with 8 Defensive Runs Saved in May. He entered the month with -2 Runs Saved for the season and finished it with 6 Runs Saved. Only Patrick Bailey (8) and Alejandro Kirk (7) have more for the season.

For the season, Pagés has added value in Stolen Base Runs Saved as well as our stats for pitch blocking and pitch. framing

He’s thrown out 8 of 32 baserunners attempting to steal (25%) and picked off two others. The average caught stealing rate for a catcher is 18%.

He’s successfully blocked 94% of potential wild pitches. The average block rate is typically around 91% or 92%.

Staff ace Sonny Gray seems to enjoy pitching to Pagés. Gray had six starts in May. His three scoreless ones featured 28 strikeouts and 3 walks. Pagés caught all three. For the season, Gray has a 2.32 ERA in 9 starts with Pagés catching. He’s allowed 14 runs in 14 2/3 innings with others catching.

The long-term solution is Bernal. Love Pages and what he brings to the table.

Bernal is the better prospect. I wouldn't be shocked to see Crooks in a trade this summer or in the offseason.

I've said all along people are sleeping on Pages.

The two kids may have better offensive upside but intangibles behind the plate are tantamount to having a solid pitching staff. Pages apparently has that.

It may be tough to wrestle the job away from the underdog.

All we did here is add another GG to our infield and team. We may be the best defensive team in baseball overall.

Agreed. Pages would make a great b/u catcher, but we should aim higher for a starting catcher.

Also, I wouldn't be in such a hurry to trade Crooks. There is nothing wrong with having both Bernal and Crooks cost controlled sharing the duty. Whether it is a 70/30, 60, 40, or 50/50 split - it is cost controlled and both seem to have legitimate upside.

Two thought- he can hit but not consistent. And if he is good behind the plate, that in itself is worthy. This helps his pitchers tremendously.

I’d love a hitter too but on our infield we can surface some offense for the best defense.

Excellent post.
Confirms what those of us who understand this game have been saying for a long time.
It could not possibly be any more obvious the pitching staff and coaches trust Pages - and THAT settles the matter.
Now, to your question.
Is Pages the long-term solution?
He is the starting catcher until someone takes the job away.
One of the prospects may do so - but it won't be easy and won't be handed over.
In the current chapter of Cardinal baseball, the job belongs to Pages.

And that's what he is Basil, a solid backup catcher who CAN'T HIT!

The pipeline is loaded w/young catchers and hopefully one can handle a staff, throw and hit!

I think he is 26 years old and a keeper. Gives Cards a lot of flexibility with prospects via trade options.

Pretty much this^. Yadi couldn't hit at first either, so maybe Pages can make himself into a serviceable hitter. We shall see. He will certainly hold the position until one of the kids in the minors can take it away from him.
