Over his last 37 games/156 PA he has a .296 avg, .844 OPS, and 24 RBI.

By the end of the season he will have the numbers he typical puts up OPS wise and his RBI is already on a pace for about 85-90 RBI. At the end of the first 2 months or so he had 30 RBI, that would be a pace for 90 RBI and that was even with a slow start. I wouldn’t be surprised if he finishes in the 90-100 RBI range and 25 HRs.

You’re right, stop embarrassing yourself.
The fact is, we’re 1/3 through the season and his numbers are for all to see. If you see the remainder of the season production like what you cherry picked…..lets all hope so
So what is the issue with a pace for 90 RBI? That would be more RBI than our 3/4 hitters last year. And our current 3 hole hitter has 14 RBI over his last 45 games (193 PAs).
I have no problem with the RBI’s….if he continues the pace…his high is 75. As you can see his overall doesn’t look appreciably better than his career avg. with the whole point being that many posters thought he’d be elite not catching. He ain’t elite.
It will be interesting to see if Contreras can match last season's top RBI producer.
Hopefully, 78 RBI for a “top RBI producer” is atrocious.
Not for a player making close to the minimum salary. The big money offensive players need to at least deliver that.

Anyone who thought moving him to 1B would make him more productive was stupid. That’s never happened for any catcher moving to a different position that I can think of.

BUT - it has and should continue to allow him to play more games. And that’s a good thing.

He got off to a very slow start, since April 18th he has the 2nd best OPS among 1B in the NL behind Freddie Freeman. Given that is more like the hitter he has been, I’m willing to bet that he’ll look much stronger when 2025 is all said and done. And because he should continue to stay healthier his counting numbers will likely be career bests.
And if the Cards continue the offensive run like were on in MAY the club should be well ahead in the NLC, but do you see this sustaining?
If we’re doing sample sizes, his last 5games he was 4for20 with 1 double and 0HR so….
Oh no! 4 for 20!

Different things happen in different months. Noot had a .665 OPS in May. Maybe it's .850 in June...

Also, the May pitching was outstanding.
Yeah and WC can have himself another April…..which is why I don’t see some outsized season from his norm
Or he could have a month better than May.

Isn't baseball fun?

That can play on a player, even a vet like Willy.

As FGM pointed out, he's been on a tear for a while!

From Bernie:

BONUS NOTE ON CONTRERAS:

After a cold start, here’s what he’s done in the past 44 games: .280 average, .360 OBP, .440 slug, .800 OPS, eight doubles, six homers.

Since April 9, Contreras leads the Cardinals in RBIs, is tied for first in homers, and ranks second among his teammates in onbase percentage, slugging, and OPS.

And over the same period of time Contreras has a .333 average and .921 OPS with runners in scoring position.

One of his best qualities as a batter is the way Contreras hits to all fields.

This season Contreras has 17 hits and a .298 average when he pulls pitches, 17 hits and a .293 average when hitting straightaway to center, and 16 hits and a .444 average when going to the opposite field. That’s an awesome profile.
Oh the horrah!

The biggest thing was playing every day more at another position rather than catcher.

But for your productivity, Todd Zeile had a career .711 OPS at catcher and .777 OPS at 3B.

And Craig Biggio had a .702 OPS at catcher and .819 OPS at 2B.

WC is the least of our concerns. He is playing 1B at a high level and is as consistent of a hitter we have.
He is part of the answer
Not part of the problem.

I think they have a pretty deep lineup where almost any night any of the players could provide the spark needed. They need more HR power, but their doubles have made up for it this year (4th in the MLB) at least somewhat. Their average (4th) has been good, OBP good (7th in MLB), and RISP has not been the issue that it was last year. Hopefully Walker is not out too long and comes back the way that he was looking when he got hurt. That was really the only weak spot in the lineup offensively other than catcher.

I really wish they had another middle of the order bat to push Donovan into the 2 hole or 6 hole.
Donovan is exactly where he should be at #3.
Precisely as I advised before the season began.

Then you need to do a LOT more research, pilgrim. I can think of at least three good ones.

He makes up what he said he said as he goes when mo said he was going to sign 3 starters he said mo would trade arenado for a fourth starter didn’t happen then he said he would be traded at the deadline then he said he would be traded in the off season then laughably claimed he was traded even though I see him in the lineup for the cardinals every day

Kind of depends on the age of the catcher when the move happens.
In WC case,33, it probably should be seen as letting him start having a decrease
in production like other positions players vs the decreased rate of a catcher.

WC caught 133 games as a 26 y/o. Otherwise he would top out in the 110 game range.

I'm interested to see how he finishes the second half.

In his career splits first half vs second half he has

1st 604 games .260/.357/.459/.815
2nd 337 games .253/.340/.460/.800

Suggesting his biggest impact was in availability late in the season not a decrease
in production rates. Production affected not the rate of production.
Still not linear since we won't see if he would fatigue more when age increases. He does keep himself conditioned.

Good Lord you would think fans have never watched baseball before in their lives. Players always run hot and cold and you are what your numbers are at the end of the season. We lose one series and these loons come out of the wood work.

No kidding it Herrera was killing it some were singing praises then he goes into a slump which every hitter does and doesn’t keep hitting .400 and they say he went into a slump because he was moved up one spot to the fifth spot which he has a .955 career OPS in lol some people are nuts
