Sadly, depression & alcohol took him way too soon. But he was someone to remember.
Have you heard of Gene Clark ?

Loved his work with The Byrds. His song 8 Miles High, co-authored with Crosby and McGuinn, is frequently cited as the first psychedelic rock song and was also frequently banned from the radio for its alleged encouragement of drug use. Talented guy from Tipton Missouri.

In the late '70s, before KSHE started playing only the same 75 tired songs ad nauseum, they actually played this McGuinn/Clark/Hillman tune "Sad Boy": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFgFaOQv72g

Roger McGuinn will be at The Sheldon October 1, as we're talking about the Byrds. Several months ago he was diagnosed with Parkinson's, so it must be mild enough as yet to still play that 12 string.

Yes, he was a tremendous songwriter but once he was no longer with the Byrds he did not get the attention he should have. He received a lot of critical praise for his solo work, but not a lot of record sales.
These two are a couple of my favorite Gene Clark songs:

I saw McGuinn at the Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville, IL last year and he put on a very good show, played acoustic and electric well, and his voice was fine. He also told a lot of interesting stories about his life as a professional musician.edwin drood wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 14:13 pm Roger McGuinn will be at The Sheldon October 1, as we're talking about the Byrds.
