They did and didn't have the DH at that time either. They actually went out of their way to keep a solid second catcher on the roster when Contreras was there. It actually started with Miguel Montero and David Ross. Then, Contreras was behind Montero and Ross in 2016. Then he became CA1 in 2017, and they signed Alex Avila. They had Caratini for a couple years, then signed Chirinos, then Gomes to be the backup.
Bingo

I get it, he spent most of his career as a catcher. But career high in games is 138, actually the same as Oneills career high in games for a season. He's never reached 500 at bats in a season. He has only surpassed 400 at bats 4 times. I know Yadi is Yadi, but he did it 14 times. Does Willson have a reputation of being an often injured player? I never heard anything about him being injury prone, but he looks anything but durable.
And at 26 years old in 2018 he only started 123 games.
At 26, Sean Murphy only started 104 games at catcher.

Let us also remember that 5 of Willson's first 6 seasons in the MLB, the DH didn't exist. So usually when catchers had an off day, they were completely off...
I remember what was needed. I also wasn't comparing Contreras to any other catcher. Only stating stats.
You used the word, ‘only’ implying he was lower on starts.

When, in FACT, he wasn’t….

Only about half the teams in the league have catchers start more than 120 games.

As far as at bats, you should lookcloser at plate appearences because wilson has a high career walk rate which dont ckunt as at bats.

Additionally even when catchers start 120+ games, they get less at bats because they are the fjrst players that get pulled in later innings as soon as a game beclmes a blowout to save legs.
They also are among slowest playwrs so they get pulled for pinch runners often too. Both cause less at bats.

Now wilson has had some injuries here and there as well but nothing too long term other than 2024. (2020 was covid shortened year)

He's only eclipsed 120 games 3 times in his 10 year career. Of course throw out COVID year and throw out this year and that's 3/8, still not great.
Only about 50% of teams have catchers eclipse 120 games each year. He also had a 117 game year. And if we are talking durability, you should probably say 3/7 throwing outnhis rookie year as well cuz he wasnt starting catcher whole year.
