I have to believe that they can - but it will be a matter of making up for any lack of ML payroll compared to the Dodgers, Phillies, Mets, etc. by just being smarter in their decisions than other organizations.

New environment. Another chance bases on experience. He did some good things in Boston. Much of the Red Sox misfortunes is coaching and lack of performance. Add to that a hot Yankee team and it seems worse.

I think the anti-Mo sentiment on here has tainted your rationale. His Red Sox teams finished last 3 times and he left before his 4th season was over. So are the Sox thriving? No.

Once the SP staff loses Matz, Miles, Fedde and RP Helsley we will be counting on rookies for next year.

I have a favorite- but I don't know how to get him. Eury Perez of the Marlins. 22 years old, 6'8". throws 100 mph. True #1 coming off TJ surgery. Four more years before free agency.

20 years ago, I would've agreed with you. However, the number of closers who throw 100+ mph that enjoy long careers are becoming fewer and fewer. Reliever volatility is real and if the Cardinals can get close to a Chapman-like return for Helsley, they'd be crazy not to do it.

5th year team option with 2M buyout.
Player opt out after year one and two.
He would sign it.
