Dobson would be a massive upgrade but why would the Islanders trade him?

They have zero good RHD prospects.
After Dobson signs his new deal, the Islanders will have all 3 (Dobson, Pulock, & Mayfield) of their RHD under contract until at least 2030.

Romanov also will sign a new deal.
They have Pelech, George, and Bolduc behind him at LHD
Oh yeah, they're also going to draft Schaefer so the Isles are set at D for awhile.

Romanov-Dobson
Pelech-Pulock
George-Mayfield
Schaefer
Bolduc

I can be convinced that Darche would trade Romanov or Pelech for forward help because Schaefer will be in the fold on the left side, but no way on Dobson.

If you believe in the theory of building from the goal out, the Islanders are set with Sorokin and their d corps.
However, their forwards are horrible. Old, overrated, and overpaid for many of them.
Sorry, I don't agree.

He would be a massive upgrade for our defense no doubt, but then what are we immediately looking for? Yep, you guessed it a center.

He's a young potential top 6 center who can put up 60 points regularly and will be cost controlled for 5-7 years. You just don't give that up, unless it's for a young cost controlled center who is the equivalent and already producing in the NHL.

He's pretty untouchable in my eyes. We can make the playoffs with the defense we have, and we can improve it through other trades. We can't ignore the center position anymore and expect to get by with what we currently have.
Dobson is a 6'4" right shot 25 year old d with a 70 point season under his belt, you are really underestimating his value.

We should drive Kyrou to New York if they'd make that trade IMO.

Great. We can then win some games 1-0. Trading Kyrou for him doesn't solve a goal scoring problem.

If we are trading Kyrou we have to get 30 goals back.

NYI are an aging team. Would a package of Adam Jirichek, Devo be enough? Too much? What would you guys give up?
If you can get him for Jirichek and a package of other prospects the Blues aren't actually high on, then that would be huge catch.

Dobson's contract projections are eclipsing 10M AAV on his next deal. Based on the opinions of Islander fans I've read, it sounds like Dobson leaves a lot to be desired in his own end. Dobson will be paid higher than Seth Jones, Charlie McAvoy, Adam Fox, Cale Makar, Moritz Seider, etc. and would be the highest paid player on our team.

Is 10M+ for an offensive specialist worth it? Trading for and extending Dobson is a calculated risk that I'm not sure I'd be willing to take if I were Army and the Blues.

NYI probably isn't going to trade their coveted NHL RHD for our recent first round major question mark and some disappointments, just saying

Makar is a UFA next season, so he is due for a massive raise and will very likely be the highest paid dman in history. He will likely get MacKinnon money.

Exactly, now that we're past the flat cap the salary structure of the league is going to be reset, quickly. Chychrun just got $9M a year for 8 years. Bouchard and Dobson will get more than that on extensions or offer sheets this summer. Makar will reset the defensemen scale in a year. Rantannen just reset the winger scale, and Marner will do the same this summer. McDavid will reset the top of the scale in the next year.

If you don't want to pay "top dollar" (i.e. among the highest in the league for that position, and/or highest salary on our team) for a RFA then the other option is to trade for a good player already locked into a long term deal, or go after a RFA with several years of team control remaining, which will cost a lot in terms of assets.

Edit: It makes a lot of sense to try and lock up Holloway and Broberg with extensions sooner than later in light of the cap increasing.

Oh bare minimum Holloway, Broberg, and Hofer will get bridge deals so that we can get past all the vet deals and have more money available.

Probably go 4-6 years with Holloway and Broberg, and probably max 3 with Hofer.
