Falling backwards into two generational players had nothing to do with it, huh?
Absolutely NOT!!! I searched BluesTalk, and found 26,634 posts telling me that TOP5 picks in the drafts are non-essential. They lead to a losing culture. They lead to tanking.
NOPE. Here on BluesTalk, the firm belief is that Edmonton is winning DESPITE MCDAVID AND DRAISITL, NOT BECAUSE OF THEM. Just ask the poor, dumb clucks yourself.
I have found a lot of posts saying that you don't tank just for the remote chance at a high pick in an average draft. Yes, if you could somehow guarantee that you get Connor McDavid, or course tanking would be worth it. Of course, that is in no way, shape, or form possible. Even Edmonton had to get multiple top picks before they found a generational player.
Not only that, but you have to completely strip the team of any sort of talent in order to just about guarantee finishing last, then with the lottery you still aren't guaranteed, just ask Anaheim and Buffalo.
Yes you'd still have a top 5 pick, but if you are tanking because of some specific player sweepstakes it is still a calculated risk.
Hell the year the Oil got McDavid they weren't even the worst team in the league. They were one of the worst, but not the worst, I believe they ended up winning the lottery over Buffalo.
We like to say how Buffalo hasn't been able to make the playoffs after being bad for so long, but what does their trajectory look like if they don't lose that lottery and end up with McDavid? Then Eichel goes to Phoenix, and Strome goes to Edmonton?
