Re: Top WAR Players
Two questions. Are these stats good? Are these stats playoff level? And how do we stack against leagues.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑08 May 2025 10:06 am Through 38 games (roughly 23% of the season), the top WAR players for the Cardinals are:

There are 390 starting position players. We have half our lineup in top 50. That’s pretty strong, right?
Re: Top WAR Players
You’re welcome! Would seem so and consider that Herrera might be in there if he had been healthy. Getting him back soon and with the way that Contreras has been hitting lately, the team’s position players are set up pretty well. Just need to get Walker or Gorman or someone else to perform at a good level.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑08 May 2025 10:19 amI want to publicly thank you for ur stats. Re: Top WAR Players
The list you made consists mainly of young guys. If Walker Gorman and or Willy get hot, could be fun.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑08 May 2025 10:25 amYou’re welcome! Re: Top WAR Players
From what I have read WAR has a discretionary factor of a comparable or average player. Maybe it is just over my head but I don’t like a stat that I can’t calculate.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑08 May 2025 10:53 amWAR!! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Say it again.
I see war as a measurable stat. If it shows a direction and comparison it has value. Is it the best tool? I think that depends on your statistics objective.

Re: Top WAR Players
I hear ya. I don’t know the statistic input to the formula. I just use it as it measures each player equally whether the data is skewed or not.Jatalk wrote: ↑08 May 2025 11:15 amFrom what I have read WAR has a discretionary factor of a comparable or average player. To me stats are just a visible measuring tool.

Re: Top WAR Players
I have a problem w/the defensive part of the metric, too subjective IMO.
I use WAR as simply one tool in the tool box when evaluating players, never have seen as the "be all and end all" some do.
I prefer a combination of my own experience + metrics + traditional counting stats when formulating an opinion.
Re: Top WAR Players
Agreed, it’s not the end all be all. It’s a solid gage though I think of where players/teams stand.rockondlouie wrote: ↑08 May 2025 11:43 amI have a problem w/the defensive part of the metric, too subjective IMO.

Re: Top WAR Players
No matter the structure of the formula, as long as all players are subject to the exact measurement standard then the comparison graph should be equal. Enough to compare.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑08 May 2025 11:44 amAgreed, it’s not the end all be all. And given where our players stand, then this could end up being a decent season IF they can correct their road woes.
Re: Top WAR Players
they need to figure out the 6th thru 8th innings without destroying MM or GG--- leahy has been great, helsley hasn't pitched enough to get any traction --- matz has been decent but is he a short reliever? romero? then what?rockondlouie wrote: ↑08 May 2025 12:00 pm+1Futuregm2 wrote: ↑08 May 2025 11:44 amAgreed, it’s not the end all be all.
