Or they put someone ready at AAA as closer. Maybe hit lightning in a bottle. Wait it out.An Old Friend wrote: ↑02 May 2025 10:19 am Makes little sense for them to make a move like that, now.
I think they're going to let Shelby Miller take a rip at it, and he's been fantastic early in the season. That works two-fold for them... he's their guy now, and if they are out of the race this summer, they can SELL him as a closer / high-leverage arm to a bullpen needy contender.
DBack put their closer on the IL........Helsley?

RH has had injuries himself, so teams may want to wait.
Does a team sign a $30+ million SP and not have designs on the 2025 season?
Miller doesn't succeed and then get dealt IMO.

They have one guy with one save at AAA. He's good, but why wouldn't they just use Miller or Ginkel? It'd also make nearly zero sense to throw a call up into that roll if you're trying to be at all competitive. Bring your top guy up and have him get comfortable in the 6th/7th/8th.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑02 May 2025 10:22 amOr they put someone ready at AAA as closer. Maybe hit lightning in a bottle. Predicting how the D'backs see this is not my forte.
That AZ depth though doesn't go away unless they are part of a deal and will probably be
needed. Playoff baseball needs such deep BP's. Everyone here knows that. It might not be
RH but AZ is among the group that will be in search of a BP arm.

Either would be a fantastic get but I didn't mention them since I doubt we'd land JL or RW but you never know how desperate their POBO/GM is.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑02 May 2025 09:10 amBaseball America has really talked up OF Ryan Waldschmidt this month.rockondlouie wrote: ↑02 May 2025 09:04 amPlayoff caliber team who can't afford to let games slip away in the NLW while their best two closer options are out (who knows for how long either?).Futuregm2 wrote: ↑02 May 2025 08:56 amAnd they are in a tough division. I have no idea either, we need a DBack fan who knows about their system
Jordan Lawlar is their top prospect and he’s blistering AAA. Not sure they’d deal him though even though he’s right now without a position in the MLB as they have Ketel Marte at 2B (although he’s hurt right now), Suarez has an .800 OPS at 3B (he’s gone after this year though), and Perdomo at SS (they just signed to an extension and really like). Plus Lawlar would be yet another 2B/3B/SS prospect.
The other one that might be more likely is OF Slade Caldwell. He’s farther off, as he was a 1st round pick last year out of HS. He is currently hitting .303/.521/.546 in A ball. The plus: 24 walks in 96 PAs with 8 2B, 1 3B, 2 HRs. The minus: 29 K’s in 96 PAs.
Their top 10 on MLB is pretty much all middle infielders and OFers.
Surprisingly I think our OF problems may be coming to an end if they go with:
Donny/LF
VSII/CF
Noot/RF
That's a good looking OF going forward w/Walker as your fourth OF'er (unless he explodes at the plate).
JJW is going to bump Donny off 2nd base, perhaps as early as next season.
Middle infield isn't a need w/Winn + JJW + Saggesse (as well as Donny in a pinch).
Perhaps a pitcher?

Right - I said if he is good AND they're out of the race, he's an easy sell. Why would they keep him if they're out of it? He's EXACTLY the guy they move, he's basically free and not signed beyond this year. If he's good, he'll have big value at the deadline.renostl wrote: ↑02 May 2025 10:51 amNoAn Old Friend wrote: ↑02 May 2025 10:35 amYou don't think Miller will succeed? It can happen, just unlikely for he'll be converting W's. If it does then yes, you'd be correct, unless
AZ is the team to sign him cheap going forward. AZ has not been acting like a team selling, IMO.

Here you go guys, just put out last night:
Arizona Diamondbacks Reportedly Seeking Bullpen Help in Wake of Injuries
With A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez both on the injured list, the Arizona Diamondbacks could look to the trade market to find another reliable relief pitcher.
Sam Connon | 23 Hours Ago
Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan and St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, both of whom were All-Stars in 2024, have been at the center of several trade rumors since last summer. If the D-backs are serious about contending in a stacked NL West, it may take acquiring one of those elite relievers for them to hang around in the Wild Card race

Here's more from another columnist:
Could the Cardinals and Diamondbacks link up in a trade?
Given that it's only May, making any meaningful upgrades via trade will be hard. Teams typically wait to trade their valuable assets until more teams come calling at the MLB trade deadline. Back-end of the bullpen types, in particular, are some of the more sought-after positions at the deadline, and it would be foolish for a team not to wait until they can get full value for a key player via trade.
That being said, one name that we can keep an eye on is St. Louis Cardinals' Ryan Helsley. With rumors growing by the day, Helsley is likely as good as gone once the deadline approaches. I don't foresee the Cardinals jumping the gun on the trade market, unless they get an offer they can't refuse. The Diamondbacks are in win-now mode, and a team like the Cardinals will likely prefer to trade Helsley outside of the division instead of to rival teams such as the Cubs, who are also bullpen needy.

Neither Helsley or Fedde would bring much salary. Their value is in the return they can bring. BDWII will not sign off on dealing either unless Bloom is good with the return.rockondlouie wrote: ↑02 May 2025 11:42 amWe both know BDWJr has given Mo his marching orders to dump salary w/NADO, Helsley and Fedde at the top of the list.
Knowing this, it's never "too soon" if you can take advantage of a situation when it arises.
For salary relief, they need to find a way to deal Arenado, Gray, Contreras, Mikolas, and Matz. Dealing any or all of them would be extremely difficult, starting with their NTC’s.

But I agree w/you RedBaron their real value is what they'd bring back via trade......
.....but that's likely to be a prospect making little to nothing vs Helsley's $8.2M and Fedde's $7.5M which is big savings no matter how you slice it.
BTW, the only NTC's are NADO, WillyC, Gray and Mikolas....Matz can be had and I'd be looking at the Mutts who are in the market for a LHRP and he was once one of them.
