the current roster, that is below mlb average tells you what they have produced and that is supported by 2 acquisitions signings of Wilson and Nolan, and acquisitions of 3 starting pitchers, and yet here you are, below average. Everything sucks, development and acquisitions. Bernie is right. But everything will be different, as is always posted, virtually every year.... It always starts at the top, and ownership isn't changing it seems.

I think ownership hung on to a system that would not work in a mid market team for too long. And would not pony up when most of the pieces were there to get over the top. I do not blame Mo for this. Yes, he has made good and bad deals. Probably better than average really. The system and resistance to raising the bar to spending prevented any serious playoff runs the last 10 years.

The only way they can contend based on mid market revenues is what they claim they are migrating too. Investment in player scouting and development. The farm MUST produce some star level talent. Time will tell if they are doing it right.

Bloom is a better choice to lead that kind of operation IMO so no crying over Mo departure here. Sadly once again I think ownership has hamstrung the migration to the new system by hanging onto Fedde and Helsley in the off season in hopes of maintaining ticket sales. Again I do not blame Mo. He can only do what he is told. Hopefully it doesn't end bad and both are doing well at the break and bring back some prospects.

Long term they need ownership (the entire group) to step up after a few years of rebuilding the farm to spending appropriate levels to compete with the best. This will mean finding a better TV revenue stream and accepting lower profits IMO. That is if they really want to vie for a WS title.

Ownership that is aging and appears to be tightening their levels of spending. The son of the owner seems to be out of touch and a public relations disaster. Future is not bright from an owners standpoint.

Transition from Mo to Bloom. The change is good although it should happened two years ago. Mo has been a disaster. While the change to Bloom is exciting he has his pros and cons.

A current roster with many holes. There are no real stars on the team. Sure historically some may have been high performance athletes but current performance does not equal star performance.

A farm system that is far behind other clubs. While some solid players have come through the system, there have been a lot of busts. The player development is really questionable. Sure they are supposedly addressing this but a lot of work to do in this area.

You have to be concerned if a true fan.
Cardinals minor league pitching has been rated #3 in MLB.
Can you provide any context? Who did the rating? When was it done? Does it consider all the injured pitchers?

Mediocre starters can always be found in free agency. Top of the rotation starters you cant afford in free agency unless on down side with durability issues.

Having more than one starting pitcher that is a prospect with mediocre potential as a MLB starter is not necessarily good. There are no top of the rotation starters in the Cards minors. Not one.

It's not too late for a midseason pivot on the GM front. Good chance Nico Harrison becomes available.
