Re: Anyone disappointed in Broberg thus far?
That's true they don't have this player at the moment. My take on it was Armstrong was on a mission in 2023 to get first round picks. The market was such that he could have gotten shut out of the 1st rounder market if he didn't move his top assets first. It seemed at the time they were determined to get a 1st out of the Tarasenko trade but I don't know if they get that first if they don't also rent Mikkola who was pending UFA. And at that time Mikkola hadn't become the Mikkola we've seen recently so how do you correctly assess what to pay him? Then Armstrong jumped the market and traded Tarasenko about two weeks before the deadline? Someone correct me if I'm wrong I thought it came a little before.theograce wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 14:40 pmI’m talking about now … and for a series like this current one as opposed to the future.seattleblue wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 14:35 pmI'll say it again, Lukas Fischer. Now with that trade they acquired Theo Lindstein and Adam Jecho in the draft. Lindstein is a pretty safe top 4 defenseman. They salvaged value and there's a very reasonable chance Lindstein becomes a Brodin (like MN has offered a comp) and Brodin is better than Mikkola.

I cant compare Broberg at 23 to guys who were able to play younger. Had Broberg been a Blue and not an Oiler we would have most likely seen him sooner as the Blues develop prospects much better than the Oilers. Also as i said Broberg had a couple of unfortunate injuries.theograce wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 14:19 pmNope what? Could have said the same about Dunn, Faulk and shattenkirk.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 14:13 pmNope, Broberg was injured unfortunately and lost some time and the Oilers admittedly didnt handle his development well thus his 149 GP, FIRST FULL SEASON where as you can see he stacks up very very well vs dmen in his draft class, given fewer games than mosttheograce wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 13:12 pmDunn was +29 in 2 seasons when he was younger than Broberg.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 12:47 pm
Broberg is 3rd +21
Broberg tied 3rd with 8 goals (only 68 GP)
Dunn put up 12 goals when he was 22.
Shattenkirk had 9 goals +20 when he was 23.
Faulk had 15 goals 49 points at age 22
Watch players play the game. Understand the situations they are in … who they are matched up against etc
You can clearly watch Broberg play and see the holes/defciencies. Needs a ton of work away from the puck, reads, outlet passes, strength/conditioning etc. these are the same things many others see/comment on.
Vince Dunn at 23 was ok, nothing special, Faulk had pretty good numbers at 23 but again an alarming -22.
Personally i think Brobergs ceiling is still higher than either Faulk or Dunn but again who cares we can disagree and see how it goes

I’ll be pretty surprised if Broberg develops into a #1 d-man. Don’t get me wrong. I like him a lot and the offer sheet was an absolute fleecing but I just don’t see that level of potential in him. I see more of a steady #3-4 during the majority of his career. Maybe a #2 if paired with the ideal partner.

I thought pietrangelo was ready a year before he secured a spot.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 15:26 pm

At the end of the day you can speculate and so can I. Doesn’t mean anything. Broberg is very soft and awkward in his body during physicality. He could have worked on that.
The Blues develop prospects much better? No they don’t really. A lot depends on teams and where they are at/what they have/goals etc. as we saw with Dunn and others.

Re: Anyone disappointed in Broberg thus far?
I see Broberg, at this point, as comparable to Gunnarsson. I have hopes he can be the top pairing LHD but if he stays on the 2nd pairing it's still a steal for a second round pick and $4.5M salary.
And this talk about comparing him to Pronger (2nd overall) or Pietrangelo (4th overall) is all apples to oranges. Different types of defencemen. And if I recall correctly the Whalers were not particularly impressed with Chris when they traded him and it took a few years before Pie became the d-man his became (with good veteran leadership to help).

Re: Anyone disappointed in Broberg thus far?
No, other much more worthy candidates to worry about.
Re: Anyone disappointed in Broberg thus far?
Right. That's because he's not on the spectrum of disappointment.
I thought Mikkola had all the tools to develop into what he's doing but was described by many as not worth keeping. Pretty sure hardly a ripple here when the Blues moved him. Eye of beholder, particularly on younger defense men.
I will say Mikkola put a lot more edge to his game after leaving here. I'd like to see Broberg do the same he's a better skater and a much bigger upside in the O zone for G & A's.
My take Broberg stays healthy he's a second pairing defender with the potential to be more.
Elated, happy, grateful to have him.

#1LHD was my view not sure how to differentiate #1 vs #2 but I get your pointSTL fan in MN wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 15:32 pm I’ll be pretty surprised if Broberg develops into a #1 d-man. That is because we were sellers and didn't have team control of Mikkola. I think a lot of people don't understand this concept, we didn't decide we didn't want Mikkola anymore, our team control ran out.dhsux wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 17:14 pmRight. It was not a matter of keep Mikkola or not as much as it was trade Mikkola or just let him leave for nothing.

He’s going to the HOF. Nobody is curious about that.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 18:35 pmHas AP won a Norris? Scott Stevens, Shea Weber…I’m sure there’s others but those are the main 2 that come to mind.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑23 Apr 2025 18:35 pmHas AP won a Norris? But they could have found ways to keep him now that you bring this up... get they did not...he developed into a better player than when he was here.

Re: Anyone disappointed in Broberg thus far?
I kinda was, but after reading the most relevant posts on the topic, It makes sense.'
Faulk is still our number one offensive defenseman. He moves well, sees the ice very well on offense, and makes very sweet passes, frequently.
So, as exciting as Broberg is...remember when he hit well over 20mph on a rush early this season?....he is tasked with taking care of business when Faulk joins the rush.
At a plus one, I say he is doing exactly what is asked of him and doing it quite well.
I wish they would let him run more.
