This guy was throwing across his body, he was not following through consistently. A pitching coach could help, but not this analytics geek.

I’m sure Oli really likes what he sees……good pat on the (bleep) and back out there you go…..baby steps on the way to 90 losses

Re: Quality Starts
They have a Sonny Gray problem. 3 HR in 11 IP after giving up 8 HR in 14 IP in the spring. I haven't looked into the movement profile on his pitches but my hunch is that with the forearm problems, he's not getting as much movement / finish on his offerings. He's getting tattooed.
<edit> Just checked. Movement on all of his 4-seam fastball, sinker, and sweeper are down in 2025 from 2024.

Encouraged by Liberatore - he's getting length without crazy high pitch counts and hasn't walked a batter through 2 starts. Couple bad innings but all things considered, especially with how they've mishandled his development, it's a promising start for him.
Re: Quality Starts
I said it when they signed him. He’s 35 now, 5’10 175lb…….i don’t care what sleeper, zipper, slipper pitch hes tossing up there……all these guys throwing around 90 with same stuff same game plan…..An Old Friend wrote: ↑08 Apr 2025 08:51 amThey have a Sonny Gray problem. 3 HR in 11 IP after giving up 8 HR in 14 IP in the spring. Re: Quality Starts
I took some heat when I said I didn't want them to focus on Sonny Gray. I know he has pitched like an ace but I didn't really consider him one, thought the low HR totals were unsustainable, and the contract structure was stupid.Goldfan wrote: ↑08 Apr 2025 10:22 amI said it when they signed him. What really needs to happen is forget how they are being paid and have at least 2, ideally 3,
SP's leapfrog SG with better production. The pay will likely be irrelevant since they aren't
buying this season and next both Miles and Matz finally are gone.

I'm not so sure about that. Seems like there was an odd amount of optimism around them. The lack of innings is only going to compound.Red Bird Classic wrote: ↑07 Apr 2025 22:30 pmWe all knew before the season started that this starting staff sucked. You're right. I should have said: Careful/wise/smart observers knew before the season started that this starting staff sucked. But these results are worse even than we expected.Chubbs0910 wrote: ↑08 Apr 2025 12:42 pmI'm not so sure about that. Seems like there was an odd amount of optimism around them.
