Has anyone said it “guarantees” a cup though? It’s just that, historically, it is basically a necessity. That’s an important distinction

Does it hurt to have one? No

Does having a top 5 pick guarantee that they will be an elite player in the league? No and Puljujarvi is living proof of that. He's played with two generational centers and another (Draisatl) who is pretty (drat) close and is very likely headed back to the European leagues after a few more stints with other clubs.

I don't have a problem with having a top 5 pick, but I refuse to believe in a "tank" as you are asking for problems. If a year goes south and the award is a top 5 pick fine so be it, but I will never, ever be on board with promoting losing and trading every player to ensure a top 5 pick. That kind of plan is for losers and rarely ever actually works.

I don’t understand the “rarely works” opinion held by many here. It doesn’t always work sure, but it consistently does work for the teams that use the picks well.

It’s is very difficult to get an elite 1C or 1D without drafting them. They just don’t hit the market often

Colorado is the closest to a "Tank team" winning the Cup. Since the lockout 20 years ago, they have the same number of cups as we do. They just traded away a hell of a winger they thought they couldn't afford only to have the cap announcement a week later. oops . Tampa hasn't missed the playoffs more than 3 times since 2010. Washington has one Cup, pundits have been saying they needed to blow it up 2 years ago, they didn't and are currently second in the NHL. Pittsburgh was GIFTED Crosby to save the team from bankruptcy. Pittsburgh voters refused to build a new arena with public money, they got Sid, and excited Pens fans happily passed the tax bill. It took Chicago a decade to make the playoffs. It'll be a decade after their last appearance before they make it again. I'm not saying that "Retooling" will result in a Cup either, but it's the fastest path to relevancy, and that leads to Cups. I think we can all agree that Nashville is the example of what not to do.

It’s insane…. I will take playoff quality hockey where there’s at least a chance any day over tanking with such implications that lead to the worst case scenario.

I have said it many times, and stand behind it 100%. After winning the Cup in '19, I wouldn't trade the last 30 years of Blues hockey for the Blackhawks. Almost 2 decades of irrelevance is unreal.

Tuesday, team came back from two goals against WC champs; lost to SC champs by a goal in a final minute.

Those are no small feats. Couple upgrades away from being a legit playoff contender.

I'm with you, man. The difference between success and failure is a lot closer than we'd like to believe in sport. I hate these times but will remember them well and draw satisfaction from them when we're competing for the Cup (and it won't be as long as the cynics here think).

I'd like to chime in and say that some of us were feeling awfully gloomy and down on some players. I try to see things as they are, and thought it was warranted to consider selling (what with the rumors of Schenn being traded), but I let my emotions get the best of me.

I was among many who thought the break in the season was dumb, but we can all laugh at me now as our Blues really needed it. I'd say we as fans needed it and this 11 game win streak.

All in all, what most of us want is for them to play as a TEAM. That's what makes for winning hockey or at least closer games that look professional. Lo and behold, that is what we've got, and the results speak for themselves.
