Last night's trades
A look at two early trades roughly comparable to possible StL trading RPs and backup catcher. Maybe Bloom can get a bigger haul.
Catcher Jake Rogers, recently DFA’d by the Tigers, was traded to the Orioles for 24 yo AA RH reliever Zane Barnhart. Rogers career slash line is 197/270/379.
The Mets moved AJ Minter to the Twins for a couple of lesser IF prospects, Billy Amick and Bruin Agbayani (Benny's boy with an 80-grade name). Minter once was nails for the Braves. Despite injuries he's still good enough to help the 24th rated Twins pen.

The Cards are only interested in waiver wire castoffs. They don't want and won't pay for top talent. They do things considering their pocketbook first and everything else second.jcgmoi wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 11:02 am A look at two early trades roughly comparable to possible StL trading RPs and backup catcher. Re: Last night's trades
The Catcher market...
Will Smith had positive news for the Dodgers. The neck injury is tricky. He has started baseball activity. The Dodgers may still want to mitigate risk.
The Angels traded O'Hoppe to the Rangers.
The Orioles did their minor deal for Jake Rogers. Rutschman and Bassalo are expected to come back. But neither have started a rehab yet. They still have Pozo as the backup.
I think these are the teams in the market for different reasons
Rays, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Guardians, Padres.
The A's are out of the race otherwise Langoliers injury would have put them in buyers market. That injury just keeps them from trading away a catcher.
Guardians and Padres may want defensive backup (Pages). The other teams are looking for offensive upgrade and long term control.
Crooks seems most likely to go right now. Power bat potential, solid defense scouting grades, and team control.
If Herrera is traded it should be a hi-return block buster.

My question with Herrera is this, where is he going to play? You’ve got Bernal on the doorstep and Rainiel Rodriguez right behind him. Bernal is probably going to be the starting catcher. Rainiel Rodriguez? 1B? DH? Do they try him elsewhere? He’s not far off at all, but his spot is TBD.RunSup wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 14:02 pm The Catcher market...

Ultimately this may be the best time to deal Herrera. Or maybe you hope that you can get a hot 2nd half from Ivan and can trade him either right before the lockout or after it. What happens if they move down team control to 5 years? He would be eligible a year sooner, which hurts trade value. I don’t even know if that’s on the table, but I know they talked about that last CBA.

Re: Last night's trades
The position problem and catching glut is exactly why I'd trade Herrera. But not for cheap. RH hitters are at a premium and other than the arm he is decent in other aspects of catching.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 14:10 pmMy question with Herrera is this, where is he going to play? A Herrera trade should be for something really good that you need.
3B Prospects: The Rays have Brayden Taylor. The Dodgers have Emil Morales
CF/ OF: I like Mike Sirota blocked at AA in the Dodgers org. RH on base machine and good CF defense. They have 4 other OF prospects
Anyway, something really good please in a Herrera trade even if you package a reliever or SP with him. Don't trade him for a second tier lottery pick

Re: Last night's trades
I don't know if it would be a block buster but I do think with two more years of arb and last year and this hitting solid he brings back a prospect that should slot into STL top . If they don't think 2027 is a year they will be contenders they should move him AND Burleson. Maybe not now maybe off season but before 2027 starts.RunSup wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 14:02 pm The Catcher market...

Problems with both for the long term:
Herrera has no position. STL will certainly hope to see Raniel Rodriguez or Bernal at backstop and Herrera might not be very good at 1B.
Burleson has significant split differences and really should be platooned on a strong team.
Whatever. I expect at least one surprise (good or bad) before Monday night.

I should learn to expect the worst but this front office has made good long term moves.

What I noticed was that two (2) catchers have gone off the Board and we are still sitting on a backlog.

It’s good to see that the DeWallet faction is alive and well. I’ve missed y’all. Whatever you do, don’t read any articles written about the Cards rebuilding their minor league player development system and trading veterans for high ceiling prospects. Those articles will not agree with your rigid DeWallet agenda.CCard wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 13:59 pmThe Cards are only interested in waiver wire castoffs. They don't want and won't pay for top talent. Step 1: Trade away prospects from your top 10 farm system for high priced re-treads other teams are trying to unload.
Step 2: Spend a bunch of money on long-term contracts for 30+something free agents.

Re: Last night's trades
I haven't went anywhere. Calling it out is common sense. Some live in fantasy that the "rebuild" (tanking) will produce some mythical dynasty when the evidence points to the very opposite of that. Teams get caught up in their perpetual "rebuild" (tanking) for generations. It's a slap in the face to fans. The whole prospect of gutting payroll to build a mythical giant is asinine, but some seem the believe the fairy tale.BrockFloodMaris wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 14:49 pmIt’s good to see that the DeWallet faction is alive and well. Re: Last night's trades
Ask yourself, "Do you enjoy the losing? For years?" That should hopefully open your mind. It probably won't, but it should. Imagine how much better this team could be if they spent even $70 to $80 million on the roster. They could have challenged for a playoff spot. Tanking is not the answer.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 14:28 pmYou seem pretty unhappy with everything to do with the new direction of the team.
