Yes they will owe him the rest of his $18 mil contract this year unless some team wants to trade for him, which is highly unlikely. Someone will probably pick him up for the minimum after he is released next week. The cubs will likely acquire another starting pitcher prior to the deadline.

Yes, instead the Cards face 3 cub lefties, 2 of whom are their best starters. Well at least Assad is not starting any of the 4 games this series, he nearly always baffles the Cards.
